I think I can see where wham is coming from. To me, this has a very urban feeling in the sense that it's influenced by what was going on in the streets whereas today music can be more introvert because anyone with a computer can record and release an album from their bedroom. This is not necessarily bad though, just different.

I also meant, but thanks for chiming in Manosg, that everything was from instuments, if you hear bass, it is becasue soomebody is playing one, and recorded from instument to tape, not filtered and sweetened, it was later in the mix, but it sounds like somebody is actually playing not pre made in some studio to fit the mood, the mood was what was played, I will get off the soapbox, but first
as an example take the good friends of the Stooges the Alice cooper band.
in th early seventies they put out 3-4 classics with this same feel. now listen to the most recent reunion of the Alice cooper band which were 2 songs on the bonus disk of his most recent release, or take the whole new album which was supposed to be this triumphant return of Bob Ezrin as producer and the original band. There was no soul, it could of been made for a video game, it had no STAMP on the music, it was bad timeless and if you did not hear who it was would not have a clue, put on a 70's album and you would know immediately who it was, there are lots of other examples, and even new bands I hear it is just background music with no real character
I'm old, I am sorry, but not that old

do you not agree that things were a little more organic back in the day which produced some music with much more character and originality,
they were creating genres, only to break it on the next album instead of sticking to a pre made "sound" so not to lose fans

for the record, new electronic "genres" are basically being made every year right now btw.they were creating genres, only to break it on the next album instead of sticking to a pre made "sound" so not to lose fans taylor swift, miley cyrus, charlie puth, calvin harris, and kid cudi have all done major genre shifts between albums, which likely alienated several fans in the process. they certainly weren't "original" sounds at all, but nevertheless they were apparently willing to take risks.

I would argue that those shifts, I am not aware of all you mentioned, but the ones I do was to gain more of an audience and thus money not in the name of musical exploration , I think of bands like U2 who do it because that is who they’re , not a promoter thinking it would make more money
I can’t speak on the electronic genre because it is not my thing but if that is the case, awesome

^that maybe true for taylor swift but that's probably it. miley is more complicated considering she's done about 3 "drastic" changes in sound throughout her career.
kid cudi went from making emotional hip hop to garbage-tier free-form grunge music that entirely alienated not just his fanbase, but literally everyone except himself - he personally believes it'll be one of the most important albums of the new millennia. in any case, he's wrong, but he clearly didn't do it for anyone but himself.
charlie puth may have implied that he purposefully made popular (in this case, trash) music so he could become successful and popular enough to make music that he actually wants to make - synth funk jams - which is not a dissimilar path to what some rock bands have done in the past like the beatles and talk talk (assuming this is true).
