"he is the only thing that can save this band"

Not really, the band went downhill with Portnoy in it

"Magnini was unfortunate enough to join DT on their worst era."
"they don't let him spread his wings though"

The dude is literally a drum machine. Even within the song structures that are laid out for him, he could do a much better job. Steven Wilson wrote most of PT's music, but that didn't hold Gavin back from grooving like a mother fucker

There are different kinds of control freaks, dude. Wilson is the good kind. Petrucci really isn't.

Damn I definitely would think the opposite in that case.

i disagree omair bro, i thought the band was holding their own up through black clouds.....cant maintain greatness for too long and most bands have a decline in quality against the test of time anyway

he was clearly their most valuable member

Yeah, Portnoy was probably the best songwriter in the band (aside from Moore).

You mean arranger. I think Petrucci definitely contributed more towards composing. Portnoy plays a larger role in the arrangements than the actual composing.

I know I'm knit picking, but I get your point Ocean. I still value Petrucci more than Portnoy, even though I barely have any interest listening to modern DT music

Steven Wilson was a major control freak in the beginning, but later on (and certainly when Gavin came into the picture) he understood hpw valuable it is to let more skilled musicians than you take the wheel for a while. His solo discography is indicative of that.

Wouldn't Wilson's solo albums be more in his control than any of his music before? The line-up for his solo band has had different collaborators on each album.

Mangini lacks the Portnoy drive tbh

Mangini is an incredibly skilled drummer and way more versatile than Portnoy but somehow he can't tap his full potential in DT. It's a shame he get's so much bashing, he's capable of so much more than this...

I wouldn't be surprised tbh, Portnoy did say he wanted to join the band again but couldn't.
