It's not that I don't like heavy, heavy can be good, but maturity usually comes with softening up a bit, and WR is clearly the work of a more experienced, confident band

I wouldn't say this lacks confidence. They clearly have charisma here, but it's placed loads better on Oceanic. That's when the experience and maturity never really stops.

Experience and confidence dont necessarily equate directly to quality. Not that I don't like WR; I do. But I think this is a better release than WR

You both have points.

@Mongi - Yeah I'd agree with that, but here it feels like "this is our first album, we're gonna kill it", and WR feels more like "this is our fifth album, we know what we're doing", if that makes sense. I guess it'd be more accurate to say they're both confident, but in different senses

@ford - You're definitely right, they don't, but with experience usually comes superior musicianship and attention to detail, which WR definitely showcases in relation to this (at least to my ears). Perhaps I'm biased because WR is my 2nd favorite Isis release

Yea they're not mutually exclusive but I've found that more often than not, immaturity can be a factor in enjoyment. It's not really a matter of experience and confidence per se, but more of how they use it. And they absolutely kill it on all of their later releases despite this one still being exceptional.

Finally giving this a listen, enjoying the heaviness with a slight progressive edge. Not expecting too much ambience or clean sections though

I was expecting way less clean guitar and ambience than I got, very pleasant surprise. This is about on par with their others for me

I didn't fully appreciate it until I got the remastered vinyl and jammed that about half a dozen times (it was the only Isis vinyl available at the time, and I'm glad it was).

The title track is soooo good. It's a shame about Deconstructing Towers though. It's the only Isis song I've heard that I really don't like.
