@0GuyMan0: Circle has less of the folk elements and the production is more rough around the edges, but otherwise it's a good next album. Eclipse and Skyforger have some similar elements, and Silent Waters basically ties with this for the best Joutsen album. The Beginning of Times is skippable. Beyond that, Tales from the Thousand Lakes and The Karelian Isthmus are worth checking out. The rest I can take or leave.

I'd say chronologically from Eclipse up to this one, then Tales, then I don't know.
Just don't leave out Magic & Mayhem

Magic & Mayhem is fun for perspective, but largely unnecessary.

I like the vocals on there better and I like what they've done with the old material without being unfaithful to it. It's probably not really necessary, yes, but it's still overlooked.

That song made me laugh when I first heard it

Which song and why?

That one from 1000 Lakes with the dance beat. It's M&M right? I can never remember these things.

Ah now I got it. I meant the compilation of the same name which is why I didn't think of the song right away. I recall something like that, yeah, but I haven't listened to it for quite a while so I'm not 100% sure if it's that song
|
| |
Ah, no wonder. I had no idea such a compilation existed.

@bloc: Yeah, Magic & Mayhem is a compilation of older Amorphis material re-recorded with Joutsen on vocals (I think a few songs were re-arranged a bit if I remember correctly). As you might expect, the production is more like the albums he's sung for. Considering how weak some bands sound when they attempt to re-record older albums (looking at you, Sonata Arctica), Magic & Mayhem is solid stuff. But again, I'd say it's mostly a fun exercise in perspective above all else.

Spot on dude, watching you guys talk about this all I could think of was Sonata Arctica's rerecording of Ecliptica being a poor example of how this is done vs Magic & Mayhem which to me is pretty great.

Yeah, I felt pretty embarrassed listening to the "new" Ecliptica. It felt dead and lazier than autopilot. At least on Magic & Mayhem Amorphis were able to commit with their newer, updated sound. It feels like an actual, honest effort.

Magic & Mayhem is a very well done collection of re-recordings, I agree. I still prefer the original versions for the most part, though.

Not to take over this thread with Sonata Arctica (but hey they're both Finnish soo..) but that rerecording of Ecliptica just furthered my belief that they just don't have that same youthful spirit and passion that they put into everything up until Reckoning Night. RIP.
