Tool's a band w a sense of humor (eg, beginning of Third Eye, Maynard's Dick on Salival, the carrots on Undertow).

Personally, I broke up laughing when I hear "Shit the bed."

Rosetta Stoned itself is a great song too. Reminds me of classics like The Velvet Underground's Murder Mystery, maybe a little Zappa.

The album isn't Undertow or Aenima (though I like it better than Lateralus), and really it's just another chapter in Tool. I just wish they'd release any album more often, though I can understand why they don't.

Personally, I don't think anything Tool does is intentionally humorous, save perhaps Maynard's Dick. Also, I'm pretty sure that the lyric "shit the bed" in Rosetta Stoned has much deeper meaning than simple humor value.

yes, i agree BD. some people just take the lyric just as it is, but if you really think about it, there is a serious matter behind it.

Definately, there surely is meaning beyond humor: Look at the context of the line by itself, it means death, frustration at being stuck in a helpless position; the context of the verse, which is to say more consternation, "Oh no, don't know;" of the song, it's just a good climax (enter humor); and the album: I take Tool's albums to be about inding spirituality and meaning and maybe even purpose through the use of recreational drugs. Opiate is your intro. Undertow takes you deep inside of what can be a trip of obstacles and overcoming for one, and something that could, for another, "suck you down." This pattern of aggression, of coming out on top, reaches its peak in Aenima, specifically on the title track: Tired of everything, not finding all the answers, he wants to "Flush it all away." Lateralus is in a different light than the rest of the albums, and when compared w the overcoming addiction theme of APC's 13th Step (not a Tool album, but still Maynard's lyrics and thus Maynard's trip) Lateralus is about finding common ground and thus, peace. Ten Thousand Days continues the trip of the perpetual drug user, which climaxes at Rosetta Stoned, the user in the hospital on a bad trip.

But, humor is still very much apparent.

I personally think that Rosetta Stoned is nothing more than a parody of the Midwest redneck flying-saucer mentallity that Maynard was seemingly raised in and thus is making fun of. Hence, while 's*** the bed' is meant to be a humourous line, it is more than anything poking fun at the narrator in this song. On the other hand, the whole alien theme could be representing a religous experience. Either way, this song is my favourite longer song of Tool's, much better than Third Eye which comes off as too pretentious and puts me to sleep every time.

between long songs, i would have to go with the 10,000 Days(wings pt. 2) or Rosetta Stoned to be their best. This Message Edited On 10.01.06

I think some of you have way too much time on your hands.

Could it be that Maynard simply enjoys writing about certain topics more than others, and the only philosophical thread "connecting" each album is the one you guys have cooked up in your heads?

It's pretty obvious they don't take themselves seriously.

tool are awesome, fuken trippy but my attention span cant take a 30 minute song of maynard muttering over some soft guitar about his shoelace. i just think if there gonna be experimental and diffrent ther gonna have to make there songs a bit more exciting and creative. i feel like fallin asleep in some songs. but ill be honest i have to listen to some more of there shit all the hype has to be over something.

it is just that whole progressive feel that Tool tends to use. personally, i like the songs that put you to sleep, ex. Intention, Wings pt. 1 & 2, Right In Two.

listen to Lateralus and/or Aenima to get the best of Tool.

Haven't heard it yet but the artwork is f***ing amazing. And BIZARRE...

And may I add that it gets atleast a 4 from me if it's even nearly as good as Lateralus.

ummm one MAJOR flaw in your review..... Wings for Marie is about his mother, but the song 100000 days and the concept of it is 10,000 days is how many days Jesus lived on earth. read the lyrics man, it's so obvious "what are they gonna do when the lights go down without you to guide them all to Zion?" good review otherwise tho. this album is almost too epic. i adore it as i equally adore Aenima and Lateralus.

good reveiw, although i'm inclined to disagree in places, i personally love all the songs on this album (not counting lipan conjuring or vingti trés as songs) and i find that although lost keys drags out it works well as an intro to Rosetta stoned, which i dont find to be a lyrical disaster. and i quite like the lyrics for right in two as well. and neither do i find jambi boring.

But, as always, its a matter of opinion, and it is a fair reveiw, seeing as you can back up your points about whats not good.

Well done mate
