It's a very great line

Very unlike Suf too, to say that

It's actually one of my least favorite lines on here...I couldn't care less about the vulgarness of it or w/e, but as someone else pointed out (I forget where) it's like he's forcing it to stress the point that he's being raw.

i feel like the emotion that he's trying so hard to convey outweighs the songwriting itself. these are pretty little melodies, but they just don't feel substantial enough for the heart-wrenching topics he's singing aobut

I can see where you're coming from Sowing, but Sufjan doesn't feel like the type of guy who would say something just to get a reaction. Just so he could be "raw." Idk

Like this whole album is not him trying to make us cry, but rather him just wanting to express his emotions/life through music. It's like the quote you have in your "summary"

I actually think the atmosphere is perfect for what he's trying to convey. I'll concede that he does try a little too hard at certain junctures, bu for the most part this is a very natural, flowing piece that captures melancholic emotions in a stunning way. It's just sad, not necessarily angry, and for that reason he doesn't really need to amp anything up to feel more substantial. It just is what it is, and he sounds 100% sincere at all times...the lyrics also make it what it is.

the lyrics are definitely immense and i appreciate what he's trying to do here, but at the end of the day it's all about the strength of the actual songs. and they are pretty good, nothing spectacular for the most part, and a little too homogeneous for me

To clarify, when I say tries a little too hard I don't ever mean that he is less sincere. Just that it means so much to him that he kind of overstates it. But that's like maybe 2 instances and the rest of the time this is purely brilliant.

singer/songwriters have to be (partly) sincere or they have nothing

That's not true at all!

Illinois shows off how well he can play multiple instruments!
