Music should stand on its own terms as art. If you need outside media to make the experience enjoyable, then there's something lacking in the music itself. I'm not sure how that's a weird thought.

And the album that resulted was boring and riddled with mediocre songwriting. Watching a TV show isn't going to change anything about the album. It exists in a fixed medium.

I'm just saying that you shouldn't need a TV show to trick you into thinking differently about an album. Regardless of whatever the TV show says about the record's inspiration or its creation, it is still going to be the same album. If the album doesn't stand on its own merits, then it's just a mediocre album.

"a 3 if you connect it with the show, a 2.5 on it's own."

Yeah that's the point Underflow, it's a cop-out album. It shouldn't be enjoyed more with a show attached, but the truth is if you watch the show and listen to the album you appreciate the songs a little more -- even if they do just sound like generic Foo tracks.

I take it you haven't watched the show then?

I was planning on it, but then I heard the record and lost interest.

So how can you spout all that off if you haven't done both? The album is old half the puzzle. Pretty much everything tres has said is right.

Because whether or not you've actually watched the show doesn't change the idea that music is art that should stand on its own terms. Having a separate piece of art sold from the original and then excusing the original's deficiencies by saying "but if you buy this extra thing, then the first thing makes more sense!" is ridiculous.

But again, it was designed to be that way....

The review page for this album doesn't say "Sonic Highway and the HBO Show" it just says "Sonic Highways." I'm rating the album Sonic Highways as its own independent piece of art, because that's what it is irrespective of any TV show that discusses its creation.

I understand what you're saying, but at the end of the day the two things were designed to be used together to enhance the overall experience.
