I mean you could make a separation between ambient techno and idm were it necessary, but as it stands, i see no significant differences inside of the genre to warrant said separation

like i said its just a lineage of hipster-ness to get from the term 'ambient techno' to the term 'idm'. there's no significant differentiation, its all just a legacy of buzz.

I guess his confusion comes from the fact that artists like Monolake, Emptyset and The Haxan Cloak are also called ambient techno, but all of their aesthetics are somewhat similar but very different to that of most 'IDM' artists (as diverging as they might be), so in a way, they definitely have differences but idk if it warrants a separation...
|
| |
yeah well boards of canada and aphex twin or autechre could not be more different either but alas
ambient techno/idm/intelligent techno whatever the fuck u wanna call it is a broad genre... like many other genres. when the genre is built around just making electronic that doesn't necessarily cater to a club atmosphere and is also inherently experimental you're bound to grow more and more diverse.

but yeah allow for diversity damn

it all depends on where the other influences are drawn
u have this vague guideline that idm is minimal, ambient, accessible for armchair listening, that is also experimental... wherever you draw that experimentalism is going to completely altar your style and set you apart from other artists in the genre. uve got aphex and autechre focusing on d&b and breaks sometimes and then u got other guys working with drone and noise instead. completely different end product dynamically, still the same genre.

i guess it makes people feel safe to needlessly categorize things

Hmm in my experience, idm tends to be faster, have more jagged (sometimes even frenzied) tones and beats compared to ambient techno, and occasionally employs glitchy affects.
But yeah they tend to be paired off together very often, so it makes sense that they were (possibly are) the same thing.
|
| |
well that would maybe be true if it weren't for the fact that they are the fucking same fucking thing

i don't really know how else to say it at this point but peoples delusions of the differences between ambient techno and idm are just that... musical constructs you made up in your mind to categorize and split the genre into two categories to differentiate between. however u may go about distinguishing between the two, you're still just constructing a significant genre difference that historically isn't actually there. idm isnt inherently a certain speed or tone, so if u are categorizing based on aspects like that ur not actually dividing them by characteristics that make them notably unique from either your perceived idea of what ambient techno is or what your perceived idea of what idm is.
pretty MIND MELTING

its like taking two indie rock bands and saying one is intelligent indie rock because they play faster and more abrasively than this other band who employs more mathy noodles which u decided to call technical indie rock
