i mean yeah the two are not mutually exclusive positions

(1)its too long and inconsistent, and (2) it also has some genuine jamz that most people will sadly overlook as a result of (1)

True

This is PT' best by the way, and Dark Matter is their best song. The only weaker songs here are Every Home and Intermediate Jesus.

I bloody love every home but yeah I’d say it’s their best as well.

I wonder, what do you love about Every Home? The first part is okay, but not as interesting as the other songs, and then it kind of devolves into nothing. Never been fond of it

a wonderful early example of Steven Wilson undermining his own work by insisting on over-elaboration in order to make it "progressive"

Can get behind that, second half is demonstrably stronger, and Dark Matter’s one of their best closers (probably only second to Stop Swimming)

I need to jam this (and a lot of their earlier stuff) asap!

Band’s middle 4 (this - In Absentia) are fucking astounding

Not really, Stupid Dream leans a lot more into psychedelic pop music (still think it’s the best thing Steven’s made across any project), Lightbulb Sun takes that sound into a more melancholy, dreamy direction, and with a little dose of heaviness here or there, and In Absentia starts adding in the metal elements that their later stuff is known for, but with a really nice sense of restraint and song-to-song flow. Signify feels pretty firmly like a cap on the early phase of their career before the evolutions of the next few

I love how this album strikes that perfect balance between the Wilson's old experimental psych explorations and his group's more trimmed-down song-oriented future

Damn was hoping I'd like this more :/

Idiot Dream is cool but a lot of this just went in one ear and out the other

I think that this album was a solid precursor for what followed up to 2007.

Great stuff to listen to as a whole, but little of it has a permanent residence in my memory.
