Picked this up first thing this morning. It's a great album in my opinion. Nothing will completely satisfy all of us who love the EP through Empire. That's just the nature of most all bands' outputs. Bands DO grow and evolve, but Queensryche with Tate evolved into something terrible. I admit I purchased all of their albums up to Dedicated to Chaos. I try to follow my favorite bands wherever their creativity may take them, but I cannot call Dedicated to Chaos creative in any way whatsoever. They completely lost the thread on that one and I refused to purchase a Queensryche album for the first time in my life. I'm not saying they hadn't been unraveling after Promised Land, but Dedicated to Chaos was a disaster. I didn't much like anything after Promised Land, but I still hung in there with them because I like the band and believed in them. Dedicated to Chaos made me lose all faith in them. However, with the past year's drama, comes this album. It is a great album. Perfect, no; but I don't believe any fan of this band should expect another Rage, Mindcrime, or Empire. I do believe, however, that the band should still be able to put out some quality music. This version of the Ryche did just that.

Having heard this set me into full blown QR mode, so I went back and listened to Promised Land. Never gave it a fair shake before, but goddamn is it good! It's got the thick atmosphere of Rage, but with a Pink Floyd-esque Noir thing going on (saxophone and everything!). It's a shame, and I think this mainly has to do with the absence of DiGarmo, that the new album is so strait forward and conforms to such standard song structures and chord progressions, yet is being so well received. I feel that PL is way closer to a proper QR album than this new one, it's way more moody and has that mature progressiveness that I fell in love with QR for.
As a musician, there isn't much here to keep me interested outside of a catchy chorus here or a dual-lead there. Where are all the asymmetrical song structures (Neue Regal, Screaming in Digital) or the moody progressive epics(Suite Sister Mary, Anybody Listening?, Promised Land, Road to Madness)? I've listened to this album 4 or 5 times since the stream went up, and I can't recall ONE guitar riff that I'd have any interest in learning. Generic.
Let's get real here, and ask ourselves if THIS... THIS is half a point away from a perfect record. Seriously? If this is a 4.5, does that make Rage for Order a perfect record? Hell, the newest Iron Maiden album has way more meat and heady musicianship than this, and that is far from a perfect record.

If this is a 4.5, does that make Rage for Order a perfect record? Yes, it is and that's why I 5'd it long ago.
Meat and heady musicianship don't equal a high rating. Maybe you've spent too much time being this 'musician' that rates everything based on how much you'd like to learn the riffs on the album (apparently comparing your own awesomeness to whatever it is you're listening to) instead of just enjoying the music. The higher ratings are most likely from those that spend more time listening to music than kissing their own ass.
