I think I’ll give this another shot tomorrow, sucks what happened to the dude… isn’t this record about dying or having cancer or some shit

semi inspired by the passing of the drummer's younger sister iirc

Damn… heavy. I’ll keep that in mind.
Excited to listen to this again, I gave it one shot like five years ago and don’t really remember much of it. Mastodon is a weird band for me. I like a lot of their earlier shit but I don’t think I’ve ever listened to a full album aside from the one time I tried this out
All I know is I saw you shit talking curl of the burl in the other thread, so I checked it out so I could argue with ya but goddamn that was a hot pile of dogshit… Im gonna assume that’s just kinda the direction they went in after this

this one is far removed from curl of the burl, it's their prog album before their radio sound

Yeah I kinda figured that’s what was up, there’s two 10+ minute songs here haha

yeah this was their gonzo concept album about Rasputin. also about fighting the devil for Brann's sister's soul after she (Skye) took her own life. it's all a bit hazy but there's a lot of great imagery tl;dr the album rules.

Got busy at work and couldn’t give this record the attention it probably deserves. I got a 5 hour Amtrak tomorrow. I’ll download this and the lyrics and see what’s up

Also yes heavily influenced by Brann's sister's Skye's death

and then The Hunter was influenced by Brent's brother's death
on which "The Sparrow" was influenced by their secretary's death
Once More 'Round the Sun was about seeing "a lot of friends pass away since the last record" (-Kelliher)
and then Emperor of Sand was influenced by family members' cancer
and then Hushed and Grim was influenced by their manager's death
I don't mean to be cynical, but I feel like "this album is about someone close to us who died" isn't as emotionally impactful as it was the first time

though I expect it'll hit hard again when the next album is influenced by Brent's death

I feel like Trilobite was the band's first significant nod to Skye's death and how it affected Brann at the time it happened. Such an emotionally (and musically) heavy song. Probably my fav don song and one of my top 10 fav songs oat

Trilobite definitely underrated. Also Trainwreck.
