This is one of those albums that gets worse every time you listen to it.

lol

those are the worst kind of albums

I agree though. the long-term appeal just isn't there for the most part.

It just doesn't sound like a Mastodon album at all to me. They changed for the worst in so many ways - the new producer = overproduced music, new artist is lame compared to the old one, and the new sound is lame after the first three or so listens.

it's definitely way overproduced. it just doesn't sound real.

and yeah I know this is a new guy and he has nothing on Paul Romano imo.

and it does get lame, because it's over produced, some of the songs just don't move you at all, and there's way too much verse-chorus-verse-chorus crap. it just gets old quick.

that said, there are quite a few moments on it that I still enjoy. but they're definitely going in the wrong direction imo

Yeah they are. It was a fun record for a couple listens but they need to put some actual effort into the next one

I love the streamlined approach they took with this one, as I didn't think the 70s prog-aping suited them well.

agreed that a more raw production job would've made this album better though. still, the songwriting is top-notch.

The production on their last three albums was perfect for their sound, I'll never understand why they changed that of all things.

The songwriting is actually the worst part about this album. Most songs don't even have a bridge section.

composition/structure is not the same as songwriting

Inveigh - I'm not being a smartass here, I'm just curious - what is it that you like about the songwriting on this?

It's a pretty important aspect of writing a song, man. I mean a lot of the parts of songs are cool, like the Bedazzled Fingernails and Octopus Has No Friends choruses? Awesome shit. But they're wrapped in a repetitive package of intro-verse-chorus-verse-chorus-verse-chorus that makes it get old fast.

this album is all about simplicity to me -- the riffs, grooves and hooks are impeccably written, even if they're not super "progressive" and certainly don't reinvent the wheel.

There are plenty of great albums/songs out there that follow the verse-chorus structure; it doesn't mean they suck or are boring.

I had a fantastic cheeseburger earlier today from a restaurant called The Whiskey Kitchen. It included the same ingredients as a Whopper. Yet it was 10x better. Why? The ingredients were of a higher quality. Now, if you took that same Whopper and added in some borzin cheese, sauteed mushrooms/onions, a garlic aioli and put it on a pretzel bun, it would still be a shitty Whopper from Burger King, only with fancy trimmings (i.e. long instrumental sections, proggy-ness, BRIDGES). It's still not better than the gourmet burger from the Whiskey Kitchen, which only had cheese, lettuce, onion, mayo, etc.

Thing is, those toppings makes it infinitely more interesting and give it more longevity, even if it's not as popular.
