Yeah I get what he was saying too, I was just kidding with my comment. I already don't listen to this nearly as frequently as I used to, although I still enjoy it a lot when I do listen to it.
Well the first half anyways --- I'm a bit more ambivalent after Dark Blue.

I was listening to (a few songs from) this from the first time in a while (maybe 2 years according to my post above). It's still so great. The piano fills on this album add so much color, like right after "Where are you now?" in the chorus of The Mixed Tape. It's nothing difficult in terms of piano technique, but it makes the music so damn fun. Just listening to this makes me antsy to go to the beach. Too bad it's been 'cold' in California recently

this is the only McMahon album worth owning tbh. Everything else he's done has been middle-of-the-road piano-pop-punk.

Fair analysis.
But let me ask you this: if this album is his best (which it is) and I'm perfectly satisfied with this album, is there any reason for me to listen to the rest of his work?

McMahon solo has largely sucked aside from High Dive

yes definitely, glass passenger is super solid and his something corporate stuff is some of the greatest emo-pop ever made
his solo stuff is different but still great

@theNateman, nah I think your opinion is largely correct. This album is much better than the rest of his stuff. If you 4.5 or 5'd it like some of us here, it'd be worth checking out. But if you think this is a 3.5, then the rest of his stuff will prob be a 2.5 tops.
As is, you might like some individual songs from his other albums, though. Konstantine from Something Corporate, The Resolution from Jack's Mannequin, or Synesthesia from his solo stuff are three such examples. I do think his style of piano pop rock has a unique flair to it, so it maybe is worth listening to his other albums and creating a playlist of songs that you do like, as an Everything in Transit Pt 2 type thing.

@tox, I've actually been listening to this a ton lately, and its overdue for a rating bump tbh. this is way better than I remembered it.
I did look up the something corporate stuff and that actually is pretty great, I really liked the first SC album. I didnt much like his first "...in the wilderness" album but the second is way better. Glass Passenger was alright, nothing stuck out on a first listen, and I didnt even get through the third JM album, got bored and switched to a different band halfway through.

Glad you liked his SC stuff, it felt just a little bit generic to me (personally) although I do like some individual songs. I've dropped off the face of the music scene since leaving this site and haven't heard his latest. I probably owe it to him to check it out though.

It's absolutely nuts that he didn't know about his cancer before writing this. Not just thematically but like literal lyrics foreshadow it like crazy - "I doubt that the doctors are wrong", "you can breathe but the air is running out" "Someone get this man to a hospital!"
