this is better than anything post-SDOIT [2]
The more organic sounding production and mix really help the engineering shine. New DT albums' production sound like ass, and not the good kind

Also the songwriting on this is far more interesting

If theres an underdog in their discog its definitely When Dream and Day Unite. Album rips up and down.

The closing track is incredible there. So much Marillion influence.

Might even prefer this to SDOIT tbh.

SDOIT is good, but a tough listen most of the time imo

It's incredibly long but very cohesive.

Anna Lee, Take Away My Pain, Hollow Years, and You Not Me strike me as bloc tunes

I don't think the production on here is that good tbh. But it's nit bad either and works well, so whatever

I vaguely remember “Hells Kitchen” being a nice little instrumental focusing on atmosphere instead of showmanship, and the production sounded great. Everything was clean and not muddy. I think Petrucci was still playing Ibanez at the time.
I also remember there being a clusterfuck of shitty ballads on here too xD

Hollow Years is an awesome ballad, the other ones aren't on the same level though. Trial of Tears is a hell of a closer.

I am convinced that Hollow Years is peak prog ballad cheese. It makes me cringe so hard sometimes and the melodies are so generic. Somehow I see value in it though; Annoying.

Take Away My Pain on the other hand is unmitigated cringe of the highest order. Anna Lee gets my pick for best ballad here
|
| |
I agree that than one is a better ballad but somehow the cringe of Hollow years adds more value.. that doesn't make sense.
|
| |
I only really like Hells Kitchen on this one. One of their best imo.
Trials of Tears rips off "In the Dead of the Night" by UK so I'll probably end up dropping my rating when I give it a proper listen.
