I hate Neutral Milk Hotel too so maybe I'm just jaded and don't enjoy anything

I love how as "Pieholden Suite" progresses, it simultaneously gets happier and sadder. In the first part, the music crawls along in a dirgeful manner as the narrator pleads his lover to forgive him for his infidelity. The second part is considerably more upbeat and has a longing, nostalgic feel to it, as the narrator recounts how pure and fulfilling the relationship used to be. The music of the third and final part goes full-on chipper; one can imagine the suite's final minute as the soundtrack to the relationship's happiest moments... and the narrator's most intense regret.

Yes I have and this is better. :P
Basically this album takes all the best parts of 60s and 70s pop and one-ups them.

A pop masterpiece.

Would I apply the word "masterpiece" to this album as a whole? No - I do think there are a couple weaker tunes and anything after "In a Future Age" doesn't exist as far as I'm concerned.
But it's still a damn great album and "Via Chicago" and "Pieholden Suite" are certainly both masterpieces. The former has gradually become a contender for one of my top 20 favorite songs of all time.

It doesn't but it's okay, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, even if they're wrong ;)

I hardly ever jam ELT, but it sounds so liberating in the context of the record, coming right after the downer duo of How to Fight Loneliness and Via Chicago. It's not particularly inventive or anything, but it always gets me.
ELT sort of kills the record for me too, none of the songs that come after it ever stood for me.

"ELT" and "My Darling" are a minor lull for me but the album picks right back up from "Feeling Old" through "Future Age"

"ELT" is a 5/5 yo, Wilco's power pop moments are some of their best imo

I like it quite a bit but I've never thought it comparable to the high points on this album - directly following the incredible "Via Chicago" certainly does it no favors :/
