man I keep thinking of how many great European artists there are out there that rival the best American/UK artists but donโt have nearly the same exposure and it breaks my damn heart, but itโs an exciting journey to discover gems like this nonetheless

This is certainly one of the artists. Perfect storm of incredible highs (like here) and tasteful reinvention. They have a sneaky consistency and replay-ability due to most of their material having its own identity (I say โsneakyโ because many of their albums were growers for me - this hit pretty immediately but also became even better, wow ๐ฏ)

What's ironic is that that these guys actually had some exposure when they were playing metal, back in the mid 90's. Sadly, that started to decrease as they began to "soften" their sound.

yeah, thatโs unfortunate and bewildering from a quality standpoint (even if I like Mandy) but I can see why that would happen
was Nighttime at least well received? I tend to revisit that one a lot more than Mandy these days. Nighttime was a โsofteningโ of sorts, yet I thought it would still appeal to the more staunch metal crowds (maybe not tho?)

Oh and I believe the idea has been discussed here before but this is actually low-key their โheaviestโ album, checkmate metalheads on the wrong side of history

"was Nighttime at least well received?"
From what I know it had a good reception as well. It was indeed softer than Mandylion but still it had some heavy riffage that would appeal to metalheads back then.
I think the exposure downhill began with HTMAP.
And couldn't agree more about this being their "heaviest" record. Such a hard album to get into (but so rewarding nonetheless).

When the band started to depart from metal, their metal label didn't know how to promote them to wider audiences, nevertheless it kept releasing their non-metal albums, because metalheads fancied them enough to buy them.
An analogous example is Conception and their album Flow.

I think that was the main cause of them never getting as big as they could. Of course, losing Anneke didn't help. Although, the lack of real exposure due to a label improperly equipped to handle a band like this probably led to her leaving in the first place.

Of course not, but they should have broken out of the small clubs and minimal streaming presence they were stuck in.

I won't disagree. Top 10 bands for me of all time maybe. I never succeeded in getting anyone into them really. There was only one time. A long time ago I got my gf to listen to Saturnine live from Sleepy Buildings. We both cried.
She didn't really get into the band though after that. But at least I tried. I did my duty!

All you can do is try. The amount of change between each album probably doesn't help the casual listener since they can get into one album only to find that none of the rest really sound the same.

I feel like if they got more play, more marketing, were pushed more they could have popped off. Like, nobody I know IRL can even name a song by these guys. It's sad. With more exposure I think they would have really captured the "goth" and adjacent demographic
