A4 was the last album of Anathema's death/doom period and if you put it in context you'll realize it's significance. Bands like My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, Amorphis, Therion, The Gathering and Anathema among others were the leaders in the atmospheric metal genre. If you see, each band provided something different in terms of their sound.



Anathema had a highly pessimistic approach lyrically as MDB and PL but were less heavy than these bands and dare I say more progressive. A4 and Eternity had this sound which was quite novel back then. So, that's why I like those albums, I was also old enough to experience all that and it was quite great.

on the other hand i love alternative 4 because it's legitimately a really great album despite a few sinkers



i really couldn't get into eternity though, it may sound shallow but the fact the guitars sound out of tune totally kill it for me

Actually Eternity has not such great songs like alternative 4 , but I listen to eternity as an album. It's not just a collection of songs. I can't listen Radiance for example as a simply song on youtube , I need to listen the whole album again and again to fall into their darkness. It's like 'The dark side of the moon' in Anathema's discography.

Lol, you being shallow? News to me. I kinda like the weird guitar sound/production; I think it gives the album a very distinctive vibe
