Also, as I’m reading more about the band I’m seeing the other bands- Paradise Lost, Anathema, and My Dying Bride, brought up a lot. Are they like the big 4 of this gothy-death-doom sound? Excuse my ignorance

@Veldin
This rules hard. IMO The Great Cold Distance is their clear masterpiece, though they are one of those bands like ETID or Opeth where people will come to bat for any given album as the best. Last Fair Deal gets tons of love, as does Night is the New Day.
LETS STAY HEREEEEEEE
FOR A WHILE

idk about big 4, but they are some of the most important and pioneering death/doom acts. they all have a similarish sound at the beginning of their careers, but are all very different in their late stages.
as far as Katatonia goes, I think this is their best record, followed by Last Fair Deal (which is a better representation of the band's long-standing style), Great Cold Distance and Viva Emptiness. All of the latter 3 mentioned are of very similar quality and sound tho, so they're pretty interchangable, as far as their best record past this one goes
