Whatshisface is the voice of a generation. Beethoven couldn't even hear the music he made. No wonder it was so shit!

I'm not even sure how far that writer has his head shoved up his own ass.

I read it and I basically disagree with it %100. Beethoven was pretty controversial, but a lot of it stems from him attempting to create material that was different. he was innovative.

"it is simply a vehicle for a self-indulgent display of bizarre mood swings and personal difficulties." - sounds kinda great actually

still, not bad to see a different perspective from a modern writer. I don't think he has his 'head shoved up his ass'

Idk. Maybe I'm being harsh on him.

none of what he says is wrong per se, the ultimately negative judgment is just a logical conclusion
of his premise
the only thing you can accuse him of is rejecting progress

That's my main problem with it honestly. Besides that I suppose he could be completely correct.

yeah. he seems to just have his heart set on the other composers of the time, and sees Beethoven as a sort of bastardization. he makes his case pretty well. it's really just a matter of whether or not you agree with that outlook.

and maybe that he is making his distaste a wee bit overtly clear

yeah, he isn't exactly hiding it. a controversial analysis of a controversial composer I guess. everyone (mostly) seems to love LVB now
but I'm sure at the time he wasn't always warmly received. should probably look into that for my own curiosity, but it wouldn't
surprise me

I was under the impression that many of his works were not well recorded during his time, no?
