The choruses to both the title track and The Sleep of Restless Hours are probably two of the most genius and emotional choruses ever.
I like this more with every listen tbh, and i've had it for like 9 months.
originally i thought this was pretty bad and the EP killed it, i have changed drastically in my silly viewpoint...i could see people disliking the vocals so the foolishness of below 5 votes is understandable, but this should get no less then a 4

the acoustic break/piano part in ...And the mirror cracked (actual ellipse in the title not me just being me) still is one of the only moments in music i'd describe as "breathtaking" or "beautiful"...

You know i didn't say i was against gimmicks since every band has some, i just said it felt too gimmicky because of its placement and use...mr. chan took the argument to different context...it felt like a case of just another opeth fanboy taking a simple argument to a ridiculous level...and with this being a completely different band i don't see the relevance of bringing it up here...

why you give this a 4 mr. thor? Lack of tossed in female vocals i suppose? I don't think the drummer has a sister...This Message Edited On 08.14.08

jeez for a Thunder god you're not very perceptive...what makes this album not perfect for you? The only excuse i've ever read were the vocals, i'd like to see another take? Use the mighty hammer and knock some sense into me...

I don't even have problems with this just vocally but it seems to me that this is one of those albums that are expected to be given a 5 right away. Like Blackwater Park, I fail to see what makes them essential. I'm content with a 3.5/4 because this is definetly a great album, just not a favorite.

I don't hand out 5's all that easily, which is the first reason. I've even taken down a few of my classic ratings after further thought. All of the albums that I've given classic ratings either have extreme sentimental value or changed the way I looked at music as a whole. This album is really solid, but it didn't really change the way I look at metal, especially since I've been listening to metal for years now.

Plus, I don't really like the overall production of the drums. The actual playing is very good, but I just don't like the way they sound.

That's what this did for me pretty much.

I can totally accept that. I can find flaws in pretty much all of my classic albums, but there's just "special something" for me personally that makes me rate them that high. No album is truly perfect.

Just listened to this, Still Life, and Blackwater Park all in a row today....and I think this is now my favorite album ever. Musical perfection.

The last four minutes of the album is beautiful. Can't think of another word to describe it.

I still think this album is overrated. Great the first time, good the second time, boring the third...
