This one gets slept on hard. Its much more concise than the gallery, even if they did rip off in flames’ style here.

"even if they did rip off in flames’ style here."

Wait what? How did they rip off In Flames? The music here isn't too far off from The Gallery, it's just more concise (as you put it) and stripped down a bit. Not really seeing a big IF resemblance though.

I mean I guess some songs sound similar in some ways but def not to that extent. Other than the solo in Zodijackyl Light sounding similar to The Hive, which is just a coincidence since that song was released with Hedon on a demo in 96, plus this came out the same year as Whoracle anyway. That's the only thing that ever reminded me of IF on this though. I'm not coming at you or anything, I'm genuinely curious what makes you say that.

Their style from gallery and eternal night was much more fluid. The phrasing of melody came straight from classical music there. Wheras here its like they just added a bunch of palm mutes to sound more like the jester race.

Somehow I don’t think “sounding like In Flames” was something they were striving for when they wrote this

Even if it was, they didn’t succeed all that well cause I hardly see any similarities. A few palm-muted riffs here and there isn’t enough for me to make a connection

i mean i definitely hear the classical influence on the gallery while this is more typically structured melodeath, i guess it's comparable to IF in that regard. the riffing styles are very different tho

this album especially sounds like DT was experimenting with riff structures, like i couldn't tell you the time signature of that riff in Hedon but it sure as hell isn't 4/4

Agreed @ both of those comments. The riffing here really sounds nothing like IF. And I definitely don't see how the increase in palm-muting means anything. At the Gates also used a lot of palm-mutes on Slaughter, so it's not like that was unique to IF as far as Gothenburg bands go.

Wasn't this recorded in 1996 anyway? TJR came out that year so yeah, I don't really see how they could've been inspired by that album.

The fast riff in Hedon is in 6/8. The second riff in Zodijackyl Light switches between 7/4 and 4/4. A riff in Scythe, Rage and Roses is in 5/4...AND MANY MORE!!!

Yea that alone makes them pretty distinct from In Flames

yea lots of variety here. i still can't hear that riff in 6/8 for the life of me lol, i know on paper it adds up but it sounds so off kilter with the accents. that's been wracking my brain for days but i love it, that rarely happens to me anymore

IF were varied on lunar strain but everything after that has been pretty streamlined melodeath

Yea the way the melody is on that Hedon riff makes you want to count it in 4/4 until it finishes and you’re like wtf. Love stuff like that

"IF were varied on lunar strain but everything after that has been pretty streamlined melodeath"

And really, "varied" for IF on Lunar Strain meant that they occasionally aped Bay Area thrash which was entirely the extent of how much they mixed it up. Also, in terms of actual musicianship, every member in DT during the '90s is a lot more relevant to the overall composition in contrast to albums like TJR.

Am I the only one who finds Zodijackyl Light and Tongues to be among the highlights of this record? I would put Constant up there too actually.
