well, in my opinion, the lyrics are what turn this from another impressive sounding mainstream effort to a landmark for the genre. They're all pretty interconnected and tell a story of falling in love and going through the emotions associated with different stages of a relationship.

I never really payed much attention to them, although I did know that this was kind of a concept album in a way

I haven't heard this in a while but I never really felt there was need to look at them other than the punchlines which were corny goodness, except for Blue Ocean Floor in which they were admittedly pretty nice

I guess I should take a look at them

Some lyrics are harmlessly cheesy, others genuinely grate for me

It isn't the clarity of the production I dislike, its the glossy and inorganic sound palette it uses... the horns at the start of Suit and Tie, like what

It's like it's trying to have the same retro lushness of Random Access Memories but can't be bothered acquiring the sounds necessary to pull it off

i kind of expected production like this for such a high-profile pop release so i don't really mind it that much.

Trying to have the same retro lushness = aiming for a similar aesthetic, not necessarily replicating RAM specifically
