This album is not highly regarded in the hip hop community. Mainstream rap magazines aren't the hip hop community. I've never heard any hip hop pioneer call this a classic, because it isn't even hip hop in that sense. The lyrics on here are trash and should never be grouped in the same genre as 2pac, KRS-One, Guru etc. Honestly have no idea why you ever would consider Kendrick the same genre as them based off this album other than he "raps"...
Its cool if you don't think lyrics are the defining aspect of hip hop, but they used to be and still are considered to be by many today. Listen to this crap if you wan't, I don't like it and i'm certainly not the only one.
TL;DR: This album is a great example of how you can pass off pop music as hip hop to people who never cared what hip hop stood for to begin with. Meet Jimmy Iovine

try actually reading the "characteristics" section of the wikipedia post you just cited, not to
mention its laughable you consider wikipedia an authority on the (any) topic

What's wrong with the characteristics? It's generally on-point with pop music.

"You do realize that your idea of the term "pop" is completely incorrect. You think that "pop" defines
a sound. "Pop" means, well, popular. And in this sense, 2pac is pop music."
Its not black & white. It can mean both things. "Mainstream" is a better term for a popular artist than calling them a pop artist tbh because, frankly, your claim that the word "pop" does not or can not describe sound is certainly incorrect

Theres a boatload of independent bands that write pop music and aren't classified as popular or mainstream, for example.

Look i dont even care, the lyrics on this are awful, you even admit that, if you want to call awful lyrics hip hop go ahead. Im not going to convince a bunch of people who don't care about lyricism in rap that 2pac is better than Kendrick. I just think its ridiculous you compare a masterful poet to this lame ass 'swag' rap because 'cool beats dood'

not reading through these last couple pages but hil why do you keep bringing up guru like he's one
of the greatest lyrically of all time
no disrespect to guru i got mad love for him and preem and gang starr as a whole but have you
actually listened to anything other than moment of truth? because up until then guru was an average
rapper at best. his schemes were almost unbearably simple and he had borderline corny lines all over
his shit. listen to step in the arena if you don't believe me. the only reason he was so great is
because he was a masterful storyteller who could paint incredible pictures even with his lyrical
limitations.
coincidentally, kendrick is also a masterful storyteller who can paint incredible pictures and i
wouldn't even say he has lyrical limitations.
you said that you don't even like hip hop that much, why do you keep acting like you know so much
when you very clearly don't? Not only is this album highly regarded in the hip hop community, it's
very highly regarded in all of music. Even old heads like Nas n Em nem fuck with this album.
honestly b it might be time for you to give up

It can undoubtedly mean two things, and sorry if I was making out to be black and white, but the idea of pop music is music that the masses will enjoy. People think that pop music pertains to solely katy perry, justin bieber, etc and that's incorrect. There is no singular sound to pop music, to make that claim is wrong. A band can make an album that fits the bill to what you might think "pop" music might sound like, but if the masses aren't listening to it then it is not pop music. Pop music, at its birth, meant music that is popular.

its not that Hil doesn't like hip-hop necesarilly, but he has a one-sided viewpoint on what "hip-hop" means. And if a rapper doesn't release material that pertains to his definition of what good hip-hop is, he doesn't like it. Its kind of like some genre's of music, for me at least, that I don't like. No matter how "classic" an album released in a genre of music is, if it isn't pleasing to me for whatever reason I still won't enjoy it. I might understand why it is so good, but I still won't enjoy it. I just don't get why Hil thinks that there is only one way to make good hip-hop
