Listening to this again and a couple new thoughts:
The "snapz" section is one of my least favourite parts of the entire album
The chorus of Pompeji is not a highlight
Anyone saying Urantia is one of the worst songs is on crack
TLID might be the best

chorus of urantia strikes me as very romantic deftones which i luv

yea I don’t care for the snaps either. probably one of the best uses of it I’ve heard but they’re still corny.

Agreed with the Urantia point, such a good track.
Glad you enjoy this potsy, fully understand why some people feel there are inconsistencies here and there on this album.
But there is no denying the flow of this album, such an easy listen.

"If this is the case I'd argue that SNW was much more successful on that front. Maybe White Pony was the first album where those inklings started to appear but there is still something very cold and metallic about that record that feels very firmly on one side of that line between alt metal and any trip hop adjacent influences. SNW on the other hand feels very human and much more harmonious with the way it atmospherically toes that line."
100% agree. Not to mention SNW has better production (probably my favorite from all their albums). WP is a bit sloppy on that front, even compared to ATF.

This is an insane take. WP's production is phenomenal, one of the best drum sounds I've heard in a record period

Abe’s drum production is usually on point anyway

That's cos Abe is the man, honestly one of my favourite drummers.

Even if I haven't liked a lot of there stuff from SNW on I feel that they have become better at writing a cohesive flowing album, even when the cohesive flowing album isnt very good lol
I find everything before SNW pretty disjointed
""WP is a bit sloppy, even compared to ATF.""
Yeah the production of wp makes the album feel very monotonous to me, and as I said before it is very metallic and airy. Not a big fan.

I love how sporty abes snare always sounds. Its borderline comical

Not saying is bad like Gore, but I've always felt ATF is the best produced of the first 4, and specially the drums.
Abe is a beast for sure.

He always has a huge poppy snare ye, haha.

This album is not better than Koi or even close.

Ngl there is no deftones member that particularly stands out to me on an instrumental level, it's more just the way they all come together. I dont find their guitar, bass, or drumming particularly impressive by themselves. Pretty straightforward band imo

I feel like Abe is a particularly important instrumental member. His groove and rhythm just adds so much style to their songs. Not technically impressive sure but it's just cool.

i think the bass and drum parts are both well above average depending on the album, esp bass

Abe is very important, as a drummer his little nuances are so interesting and unique.
Not to mention he rides a groove in such a way very few drummers can pull off with such flair.

the riffs only come alive thanks to his drumming
