what i find very jarring is the whole disposition of the band: the vibe of older stuff like 777 was wholesome camaraderie kinda stuff and then the vibe on the past 2 albums is so overly edgy and a lot of the band are semi-notorious for being assholes. I know that shouldn't color my opinion of the sound but since I grew up with the band from a really young age, it sours me on this album just as much as what i think are legitimate flaws with the songwriting, etc

"this album is a hot chipotle fart in an enclosed space"
Missed this little nugget buried in a sea of self-victimization

tbh just feels like structurally they went back to basics ala TOCS and just modernized it with industrial elements. and if they stayed dead my shit taste would be even more shit cuz this album was a major domino effect

@emim we're tryna turn the page here but thank u for the comment because it's a good example of the substanceless shit stirring possible on here some times that should be ignored
MOVING. ON.

are we talking hallelujah or cycles

sucks that this reunion has probably been the most direct example of "once they got healthy they got bad" applying to a band i love (which is NOT true about everyone or even most bands just sadly the case w this one) since so much of the 2006-2010 stretch was fueled by conflict within the band constantly fighting for what ideas would gain prominence in the sound, not to mention the lyrics revolving more and more around spencers addiction and self destructiveness at the time which make those records feel apocalyptic as fuck .
im thrilled that they broke out of the christian scene since if not for that spencer would probably be dead at this point and its cool that theyre all vibing w each other now but the new stuff is so watered down. none of that fire is there anymore since (on this record in particular) theyre all just writing middling stuff so they can all agree upon it. it also does not help that their idea of "making something they can all agree on" is just writing shitty buttrock songs. last time i listened to this i literally didnt like any tracks, not even the ones i used to dig like no frame and on my teeth. new one is at least looking like a step in the right direction bar hallelujah but i rlly dont know if itll be enough of a step for me to jam it all that much

i still think On My Teeth rips tbh
but yeah i agree with just about everything u said lol

"MOVING. ON."
Thank you, arbiter of the underoath thread.

to be honest, every time i revisit this (once or twice every few months to this point) i expect all the criticisms to make more sense and myself to dislike it more and it continues to hold up. i'll admit it doesn't feel as conflicted and chaotic which does drag it down a little but the writing's... still solid regardless?
i mean, i feel that tracks like "No Frame", "In Motion", "It Has to Start Somewhere", "Hold Your Breath", hell even "I Gave Up", still feel emotionally impactful and it's really only the middle stretch of "Wake Me" and "Bloodlust" that threaten to drag it down, i even like "Rapture" plenty and i'm not even sure why.
side note: "On My Teeth" was far from one of my favorites and at one point it was my least favorite song here, just because it was "heavier" didn't mean anything to me. heavier =/= good, i'll almost always highlight a good atmosphere, melody, or something that grips me emotionally over a "sick riff bro."

yr welcome emim, put a sir on that next time bub
Spencer's lows were always my favorite thing about the band so the heavier the better. Not usually one of those people that cares about a band toning it down but it handicaps them imo

spencers lows were always my favorite thing about this band [2] not like they really show up on this record (and wouldnt have saved these songs w their insistence upon repeating piss poor shitty melodies) but theyre in damn excuses and pneumonia so ill take it. honestly think part of my excitement when damn excuses dropped was just finally hearing them again

The new album will most likely just be a better version this, which kinda sucks but whatever. Static Dress is restoring that old Underoath feeling so I dont really have to settle for whatever mid these guys might put out.

tbh even on their best albums, my favorite tracks were always the melodically focused and atmospheric ones as much as i love the full package from DTGL-Disambig. To Whom It May Concern might just be my favorite track of theirs outright.
"Static Dress is restoring that old Underoath feeling so I dont really have to settle for whatever mid these guys might put out." now if only their album would actually drop...

Static Dress is the future of post hardcore. Absolutely love those guys, been obsessed with em lately. All the best elements of TOCS era Underoath with a touch of Loathe and the intensity of Vein.
clean, safeword, and sweet are all such incredible jams. They're so good I might even write a rare review for when their debut drops.
