I enjoy Back to School, it's catchy and a banger imo.

I think in the case of WP, metal (or alt metal in this case) didn’t fuse shoegaze and trip hop elements as well as they did before 2000. the competition back then was also Incubus lol. plus they jumped away from the whole “nu-metal” thing while it was still about to hit the peak.
also the internet was a baby back then. people would create their own sites to nerd about music before blogs became a thing.

@skud (and anyone else) So is it fair to paraphrase that the prolification of their more melodic aspirations is what makes wp "revolutionary" within the context of their discog to you?

I agree with both pots and Wolfe here tbh, both very valid points.

Pompeji is the highlight of the album. Age of maths is bad. Error is just normal. The rest of the album is superb.

Re: trip hop, revolutionary etc
If this is the case I'd argue that SNW was much more successful on that front. Maybe White Pony was the first album where those inklings started to appear but there is still something very cold and metallic about that record that feels very firmly on one side of that line between alt metal and any trip hop adjacent influences. SNW on the other hand feels very human and much more harmonious with the way it atmospherically toes that line.

tbf people would say “deftones are going trip hop!!” when literally it was one instance on the record, Teenager (maybe also rx queen but barely). they were also showcasing more of their post-hardcore influences and ambient noises or whatever the hell they allowed Frank to add
I agree that SNW is a more realized product of what was to become them. They were on top there even if they had turmoil behind the scenes.

Saturday 9/26.....approx 24 hours with Ohms, reading on page 29 of Sputnik comments (what other band demands such devotion?) reading through day old comments?
Initial reaction: 4.5, near perfection. What other band at 30 years in could hope to make their best album? Most would say what other band could hope to make a great album....
Obligatory Deftones rankings:
1) Koi No Yokan/Diamond Eyes
2) Ohms
3) Around the Fur
4) White Pony
5) Deftones/Saturday Night Wrist (never got the love for these?)
6) Adrenaline
7) Gore (utterly forgetful/contemptible)
Anyways, that's me. Feel free to judge...kinda what we are all doing here

Chi was honestly such a cool dude, I don't mind Sergio but there is something that has definitely been missing in their music since he passed away. He brought a certain warmth to his bass tone and his playing that was at the core of their music that I just loved.

Pompeji might be my favorite song on here. I get Cirkus (by King Crimson) on it which is a band I've been listening to a lot this year.

Chi on "Change":
“I get a lot of grief from Stephen anyway – he says, why don’t you just play along with my guitar riff? And I’m like, why don’t you fuckin’ piss off? He’s like, can’t you just play along?... I remember on our song 'Change (In The House Of Flies)', him and Terry Date said, oh no, you’re not gonna play that goofy dub-reggae bass-line, are you? And I was like, yes, that’s exactly what I’m gonna play! And then it became a really big song for us, so I was like, okay, now let me write the fuckin’ way I write.”

I also love how he used to trash the HITE video and most of their music videos all the time. Dude was keeping it real 24/7
