I really try to give Meshuggah the benefit of the doubt every time they release new material, but man, I just don't fucking get it. New song is boring. Two stale chug riffs (one that goes on for 90% of the song?) that would be lambasted if another band put them out, bad and awkward synths, and the typical modern prog metal tap-y noodle solo. I do not understand why everyone gives this band a pass, they are not good.

if a deathcore band released this song (which they totally could) the reception would be completely different

hyperbole alert

“typical modern prog metal tap-y noodle solo”

is ‘94 modern?

I getchu brandon you’ve honestly tried over the years. these guys know their appeal, and they influenced metalcore/deathcore all around so to say that deathcore band could’ve released that song then sure, maybe. that means meshuggah influenced them, and they’d still be missing a quality ingredient that would make me trying to sound too hard unlike meshuggah.

Look, I understand if you find these guys boring and one dimensional. Obviously they aren't for everyone but to deny the influence they've had in the world of metal is ridiculous. Devin Townsend once said "everyone rips off Meshuggah" and he's right. Love em or hate em their ability to maintain tight rhythms with such odd time signatures is nothing short of amazing. Plus they have Tomas fucking Haake, arguably the greatest drummer of all time.

So there's your non ad hominem response

@Relinquished - Firstly, I love you despite our many differing musical opinions.

I definitely can definitely acknowledge the impact Meshuggah have had on metal/deathcore and I am definitely grateful to them in that regard as I am a fan of many of those bands! I guess my thing with Meshuggah has always been that I genuinely feel like they get a free pass for stuff other bands get shit on. I understand that many people probably give them that “pass” b/c they think ‘sshug do it better and more power to them for that! I just disagree.

And I’m hoping that most people know that despite my very real disdain for the band, I’m (mostly) trolling here. I completely get loving a band and wanting to defend them from what you believe is unfair criticism.
