So many new albums are seemingly paying homage to St. Anger. Take the new Bullet for My Valentine. Honest, emotional lyrics even if they aren't the best, no guitar solos, simpler riffs... that being said Gravity > St. Anger.

Death magnetic is a real good time and I was pretty thrilled in 08 because it felt like they were trying to apologize to me personally lol
And yeah, Ben - they actually all said it was like this incredible masterpiece lol then it came out and everyone did a 180 like “OH JUST KIDDING IT SUCKS”
@agent -aha I actually told people I liked anal cunt back in the day cause I thought it would sound cool, but secretly I hated their music even then
I don’t know how to love because of St Anger

I'll be honest, I quite enjoyed "40 Reasons to Hate Us" around the time I was about 13-14. I'd listen to it in between whatever "emo" band was the flavor of the week for me (I had a very primitive view of what emo actually was, I assumed like Pierce the Veil and Sleeping With Sirens were emo lmao) and I'd have some fun with it.

Didn't you see the St. Anger video from St. Quentin? It was plenty to convince me not to go anywhere near that album.

For me it all started when they covered Whiskey In The Jar. Load was bad, but forgivable. Whiskey was when they told me fuck you, we're going separate ways now.

Metallica dropped off big time after The Black Album tbh. Load was a huge stepdown but was an alright album, and Reload was worse. They've rebounded a bit with Death Magnetic and Hardwired though.

Whiskey would be a solid cover for your local college band.

Tbh I had a grudge against the Black album and didn't end up loving it until years later. Now I think it's great. I even really dig Load now that I'm older.

I think people projected the load album as something to listen while sitting on a sofa and having some whiskey, instead of throwing dead bodies at a gig, and spitting to the band as a symbol of reverence.
