Been jamming Still Life and it sounds....well it just doesn't sound anywhere near as good as this.

song-wise I'd say still life comes close, although nothing on that one can touch the t/t here. sonically this blows still life out of the water.

i said it in an idiotic way, but I was talking production value.

More like Leper Affinity is the only song that can touch half the material on Still Life, especially the first 3 tracks.

The t/t dude, among the best songs ever.

Still Life is a bit better than Blackwater Park, even though BP's production is way better.

I'd agree with that. I prefer the variety on Still Life, not that this isn't awesome & it's very cohesive partly because of the relative lack of diversity. The atmosphere on here is consistently great as well, you can really immerse yourself in it, I just feel like Still Life is very ambitious & takes me on a spectacular journey due to all it's twists & turns.

I don't know, this doesn't seem less diverse than Still Life to me

I'd say this is even more diverse because it has songs like drapery falls and dirge for november which are, to me at least, unlike anything they've ever done

Just for the fun of it:

The Moor > The Leper Affinity (very close call)

Godhead’s Lament > Bleak

Benighted = Harvest

Moonlapse Vertigo = The Drapery Falls (might tip slightly towards Drapery though)

Face of Melinda = Dirge for November

Serenity Painted Death = The Funeral Portrait

White Cluster < Blackwater Park

Didn’t mention Patterns in the Ivy as Still Life is missing such an interlude but it’s damn beautiful.

All in all both records are equally awesome for me with slight tendencies towards BWP.

I find Still Life to have more distinctive parts, that could be seen as praise for this album though due to how it all fits together seamlessly (I guess). This has a (seemingly) very deliberate dark atmosphere & you can get lost in the constant barrage of winding riffs if you're not paying attention. It has a repetitive quality (again, not necessarily a criticism).

This one did take longer for me to fully enjoy so maybe months/years down the line it's genius will be revealed & will eventually overtake Still Life.

Harvest is a beautiful song no doubt but comparing it to Benighted? Come on...

Benighted is better, yeah. Davil's comparison actually looks like he prefers Still Life, just noticed. That's not what he's saying though...

BWP and SL are almost identical in quality so I don't care about that. But Harvest is at the end of the day a 4-chord song while Benighted is a finger-picking masterpiece amongst other things. There's levels, just saying.

I knew this would cause some disagreement but I really like both tracks equally. That harmonies in Benighted at about 3 min. into the song are breathtakingly beautiful, among my favorite moments ever. But I also love the rhythm and the slightly melancholic and soothing harmonies of Harvest. I also tend to see it as an prelude to Drapery which gives it some additional momentum.

I've never cared for Harvest at all, to this day it's an insta-skip. Benighted loses points for being a Camel ripoff but it's definitely the better song

Yeah it's just my overall feeling. I just come back more often to BWP, never get tired of the t/t and Drapery. But both records are indeed equally amazing and preferences are steadily shifting a bit.

I still like it a lot and never skip it, it's part of the Drapery-experience for me. It was also one of the first songs I ever got interested in when getting into Opeth so there might also be some nostalgic value.

Harvest is very pleasant. Mikael's poetry is excellent if a tad pretentious, just the way I like it. But Benighted is a song I've been trying to learn for fucking ever and it's extremely hard without major finger-picking skills whereas Harvest is mostly entry level chord strums with basic layered harmonies. The level of skill it took to create the two songs is not comparable in any way.

Even in 1999 Mikael was fucking beast on the acoustic... that fucking dude was a god.
