'I don't think anyone can deny the prog influence on Symbolic but the prog influence is way heavier on TSoP. Kinda to the point that it's pretty much straight prog from start to finish.' (2)
That coupled with the vox (which you also mentioned) are valid reasons why someone would greatly prefer Symbolic. Death moved even further away from DM with this album and whilst you could say the same of Symbolic, the departure wasn't quite as drastic a shift. Symbolic has absolutely no fat on it whatsoever, whereas this could do with a little trim, that's not to say there isn't some excellent stuff here.

I was in a stubborn mood yesterday, I just have a bit of a personal crusade against the term "wank" that I find often thrown around without reason. I can't see this album as wank, because to my ears it constantly throws memorable motifs and exciting ever evolving sections, even the solos are tasteful. I don't hear any more "fat" in this songs than Symbolic's, to use Demon's word, though it does have a greater focus on instrumental passages.
If we strictly speak of the best compromise between prog and compactness then ITP trumps any of the others imo (and is my 2nd favorite for this reason).
As for the vocals, they aren't my favorite Chuck but I think they fit the hellish landscape.

Agreed 100% about ITP. That's my fav Death record tbh.
But yeah I def wouldn't call this (or any Death album) wank. For some people, tech and prog are basically synonymous with wank but that's obviously not true at all. I do think Symbolic is more focused overall and I enjoy it a lot more but I don't think this one has bad writing or anything. I just have to be in the right mood for this one, whereas all other Death records I can listen to whenever. But that's just a personal thing.
The vocals do fit the music for sure. For some reason, certain high pitched vocals just don't resonate with me at all. I can't fully enjoy a lot of Priest or King Diamond or stuff like that. Love the music but the vocals just kill me at times. Not sure why tbh, I enjoy bm shrieks and stuff like Maiden. It's just like a certain pitch just rubs me the wrong way or some shit idk haha

Ah that sucks. I have the same problem with horns, I like them but when the focus is on a long and technical solo I often don't find them pleasant anymore, it becomes like white noise. That's such a shame because I love jazz but I have to struggle with a lot of classics for that reason.
