I always preferred the Watcher's Monolith to Painted Grey

Wow, this is nearly 7 years old now...remember listening to this on repeat while playing lord of the rings online. Ahh sentimental value.

This is definitely better than I'd initially thought, I'll give you guys that. Felt overlong the first time but even Black Lake didn't overstay it's welcome, subtle dark beauty with a few spectacular moments. I think sometimes you try too hard to find something special & it's better just to let it wash over you. Listening but not concentrating too much, not dissecting it from every angle. Helps with the atmosphere of an album such as this, you get lost in it.

I didn't mean for this to be a mini-essay. Oh well...

What, nooo, it's good to have some longer comments. I tend to write longer ones than that one, but after all I think it's important to display your opinion in a differentiating way and five word comments aren't enough for that.

This is an album that surprised me in a positive way right from the start, but that's because I knew how much less love is gets compared to its three precursors. But even then, it grew for a long time and - like I mentioned above regarding Ghosts of Midwinter Fires - it still surprises me every now and then with something that was "just there" the previous listens that I've come to love completely out of the blue. It's definitely an album that's worth some tries because it - like every Agalloch album up until this point - has a lot to offer on the long run.

If only Serpents grew on me as much as this did.

I'm always planning on trying to get into Serpent more, but I never really find the motivation. There's not much about that album that makes me want to come back...

Serpent is enjoyable if given some time. If it didn't have the Agalloch name to live up to, there would have been a lot more buzz about it. FWIW, the only weak tracks on it are Vales Upon Dimension and Plateau of the Ages. There's three acoustic tracks on Serpent that are placed perfectly, and are beautiful.

**I've spun Serpent at least 20 times.

That's odd... from what I remember those 2 tracks are actually the 2 that stood out from the rest, but maybe I'm wrong. It's been a while, I'm actually looking forward to re-listening to it since I've exhausted all the other Agalloch stuff recently. I do agree that the acoustic interlude tracks are really really good.

'What, nooo, it's good to have some longer comments'

I agree wholeheartedly but sometimes it makes me feel guilty, not sure why, hopefully no-one really cares but I like to elaborate rather than just say 'classic' or 'sucks' & the like. It's cool if people don't want to do that but personally reading several pages of one word/line comments with little to no substance is kind of boring. It's nice to have an actual discussion.

I agree with vales being the weakest on serpent but plateau is an epic closer

'To Drown' on here is an epic closer. In fact Agalloch closers are generally strong. I might try out Serpent next, may as well... I'm braced for disappointment though.

Vales and Plateau are the weakest numbers on Serpent.

Plateau was my favorite the last time I checked, but I'll listen to the whole thing again some time the next few days. We'll see what I think of it then.

Dark Matter Gods is easily the best on there imo. The opener rules too.
