Emperor of Sand sounds like The Hunter trying reaaaaally hard to pass for Crack The Skye pt.2, so much so that it occasionally succeeds.

Optimistic about the new one now, Crack The Skye is my least favourite of the first 4 but it's still great. If it's more like that & less like The Hunter then I'm interested, definitely.

Also the typical modern Mastodon chorus, as it was crafted with "High Road" back on OTRTS is used several times in a couple of vaguely different shapes.

I thought Hunter was awesome. Solid as hell.
Round the sun lost me. Halloween was good tho

I'll probably listen to it again... maybe, but I just remember it sounding like Mastodon by numbers i.e. all the interesting, progressive bits taken out, and it had more of a poppy sound which is fine in itself, I just didn't think the song-writing was particularly impressive.

I'm with Chug. Loved the Hunter. Round the Sun bored me. Subpar songwriting yeah.

Jamming new record now:
- Sounds almost nothing like CTS.
- There is a ton of riffage, more than Round the sun
- More stoney shit going on here
- Brents solos back to the forefront again. Some songs he shreds ass
- Word to the Wise is easily one of the best things they have done in ages
- Weird time sigs all over this album
- Scott Kelly is on Scorpion Breath, it has those weird chords from the start/Verse of High Road and I hate them
- Last song brings back the Mastodon Stomping and goes full Leviathan halfway through but takes it sweet time to get there.

It is probably the best thing they have done CTS. Sounds like what Round the Sun should've been, they manage to expand on ideas that I heard on Round the Sun but never latched onto or thought felt half-baked.
Show Yourself is basically the pop-masoton sound taken to its logical extreme and conclusion, I don't care for it but it's an excellent example of how broad the songwriting skills of these guys can stretch and still sound like themselves.

It is not a return to any previous sound, but there are parts of previous albums sprinkled all over the place here.
