'Yeah vocals bad production bad tacky lyrics blah blah blah I really think the fundamental reason for the backlash is simply that people who care about art and want art to flourish will always to some degree know a sellout when they see one
I know music nerds are very shy about using the s-word these days but man these guys reek of it'
yeah, I often hesitate in using the term, but with these guys it seems almost overwhelmingly obvious to me. There's probably no way we'll ever know for sure (without them straight-up admitting it), but their whole schtick / sound just seems almost surgically engineered to cater to a specific audience. A lot of their individual characteristics do not mesh well (and I don't just mean musically - because everything surrounding the band appears off)
I genuinely find a lot of lyricism cringeworthy and juvenile, to the point where I'd question whether it's genuine, or again, catering to a specific audience. I mean, how old are these guys? The whole anonymity thing is not only gimmicky af, but makes zero sense if you want to connect with your audience. In this instance, the two seem to conflict. I guess that's the running theme here, i.e. the overall package is just a confusing mess and so is their music.
tl;dr version: awful music regardless of any of the optics, there are just 'levels' to this and my score can only reflect that to an extent (where's my 0/5 option?)

I can’t believe this thread is still so active 🤣
I think they have the ability to make a great album, I like what they’re going for
However, every time I meet a fan of theirs I want to drop my rating another .5

That’s true actually. If they’re gonna be sellouts they need to sellout better.
Ghost have been nailing it for years.

I've seen it done many times for no conceivable reason tbh, so I'm inclined to disagree
Then again, when Smok and Tundra are involved, logic tends to rapidly throw itself out of the window

'Smok will 2 this but 1 Ulcerate and Meshuggah albums lol'
jayender literally brought them up on this page, as examples of two acclaimed metal bands that smok dislikes
thats not a statement of similarity except for both being acclaimed metal bands

yes, but that is also them being 'lumped together'. I didn't say anything about their stylistic differences, just that I literally see them mentioned at the same time quite a bit. I know Tundra does it a lot (i.e. mention bands that are popular here and brings up the fact they're terrible at each and every opportunity, especially when his faves aren't 'recognised' by other users - maybe Smok is a known hater of these bands too(?), but then he seems to hate most things, lol... so why those two in particular?)
