I'll have to check those out. Carrion Skies by Fen is apparently the best Agalloch clone in the past couple years, I haven't heard the whole thing but it sounded sweet.
The reason they broke up is probably Haughm's loss of inspiration, desire to focus on his solo music, and his ego. The drama was probably b/c the rest of the band didn't want to end the band, it created problems, and he kicked them out/they left.

Just listen to Drudkh and Ygg

yeah drudkh's older stuff rules hard

Definitely try Ygg then. It's somewhat similar. Liberal use of the Jew Harp, aka the 'bing-a-boing-a'

You might like The Morningside's debut as well. Sort of early Agalloch meets early Katatonia

"The drama was probably b/c the rest of the band didn't want to end the band, it created problems, and he kicked them out/they left."
what drama? it was pretty civil as far as i knew. and that wouldnt really make sense, if he wanted to end the band he would have ended it, instead of kicking them all out and then ending it. he obviously didnt have his mind made up on whether he wanted to continue with it or not. or, if hes as egotistical as everyone says he is (though i havent seen anything to support this), its possible he kicked them out and then ended it so they wouldnt try to continue without him under the Agalloch name. theres not evidence to support that either though, just pure speculation.

"don anderson released a statement saying he didn't want to end the band"
where? i googled, didnt come up with anything.
edit: nvm, apparently just switching "agalloch" and "don anderson" around made a difference.

yea of course this is all speculation, but there was clearly drama of some sort given the content of Don Anderson's letter. He was clearly devastated, and didn't want the band to end. On the not ending the band at first, most likely Haughm was conflicted about putting the band to rest for a day or two, but after thinking on it decided it was best.

"Their last album, The Serpent and the Sphere, came in at No. 11 on our 20 Best Metal Albums of 2014 list."
damn really?

Yeah it's pretty heartbreaking to read. I'd be curious to see what he'd be involved in if he decides to keep making music.
It was only some reviews that had mixed things to say about it, Serpent's average was above 3.5 for a while. Most sputters were satisfied with it.

agreed, i really hope he does. i think John was the main songwriter but from what ive deduced, Don was an important contributor.

It was easily one of my top 5 for the year.
And damn, I hadn't seen that statement until now. I feel bad for the guy. I watched the presentation he gave at UVic on Youtube and he seemed like such a chill, humble, down to earth dude.

He was at least the second most important member if Haughm was the main songwriter. And yea I recently read and watched his talks and interviews, he seems like an infectious and intelligent guy.
Serpent was indeed awesome, the whole middle section and Plateau are amazing.

damn man.

Listening to Serpent section by section helped me a lot, as I had a hard time getting into it for a while. The whole first and last 15 minutes are each very dense and slow-building, but definitely worthwhile if you pay attention. The middle half hour is mostly melodic, more immediate songs that are great in other ways.
