@egarran agreed, his theatrics perfectly fit the music (the chanting on the title track is out of this world).
This album wouldn't have been so special with Dead on vox. I don't wish to insult his memory, but I always thought he was a pretty average bm vocalist. I guess his popularity among many black metal fans has more to do with his scene antics and his suicide.

I think if Euronymous had stayed alive he'd have moved into more technical/progressive Black Metal. I really hate that he ended up dying, he was the sort of mastermind in a way. Shitty person but it can't be denied the guy had a great mind for Black Metal music. If you read old interviews with him, you can actually read that the dude listened to all kinds of shit, even stuff like Jean-Michel Jarre.
It's interesting that Varg was a political person even back then but Euronymous was just like worried about writing riffs and perfecting a sound. I think he could have really progressed as a musician. Eh it is what it is. It was inevitable in a certain sense.

By the way, Atilla is a really nice guy. He does all sorts of shit like Opera and it's just weird that they make such Satanic and evil sounding music yet Atilla is a nice guy. Maniac, on the other hand was a lunatic.
It's also interesting that, imo, Necrobutcher and Hellhammer still have the same sort of attitude as Euronymous had, (though necro disliked him) I think as long as Necro and Hellhammer are in the band we'll still retain that Mayhem evil sound.

@Eons : oh yeah Euro was instrumental in shaping the Norwegian sound and scene. I may be wrong, but to my knowledge, the almost constant use he made of fast alternate picking guitar riffs was unheard of back then. That and his managing the Helvete store, his correspondence with many bands around the world...
He was a piece of shit, that's for sure, but he's also one of the most influential musicians in the history of black metal (although these two characteristics were never mutually exclusive, especially in black metal)
