i'm younger, so maybe that has something to do with it; the concept just doesn't sound novel to me at all

it is true tho that no other band has been able to replicate the sound of this
(or maybe someone has, i'm actually really ignorant when it comes to shoegaze)

So, I'm just finishing the first side of this thing. I hope the second side is better. It feels like the album doesn't officially start until When You Sleep which is the first track I actually kind of like on this thing due to the atmospherics being somewhat more effective on it. To Here Knows When is meandering horseshit, Touched is utterly pointless, Loomer is just kind of there and Only Shallow was two minutes too long. Goddamn.

And with the conclusion of Soon, I have come to my verdict. It's good. It's decent. However, that said, I cannot get over the absolutely trite nature of the first half in order to give this a higher score. This album doesn't really get started until When You Sleep and still manages to get somewhat monotonous around the middle of both Sometimes and Blown a Wish. However, when it really gets going on tracks like I Only Said, Come In Alone, most of Sometimes, Soon and What You Want; the band makes good on their ambitions. It was still kind of an slog overall but I could at least appreciate the direction of the tracks listed.
I can't help but feel a bit disappointed but this is definitely the best shoegaze album I've heard. Who knows, maybe I'll put it up to a 3.5 later on.
As much as I hear this album not "being something for the mainstream", that doesn't really make me feel like you need to absorb this thing for a lengthier period of time in order to find what's good in it. It's pretty clear why this isn't mainstream. On top of the production, the songs aren't as consistently engaging as they're said to be and some of the atmospherics (or most of them on the first half) just fall completely flat.

OK, you can have whatever opinion you'd like regarding my statement about To Here Knows When but let's not pretend like Touched was in any way necessary or substantive.

@cas the music you listen to tends to focus on dynamics and instrumental prowess and energy so this is a different style to what youre a fan of

@TheSpaceMan I wasn't exactly expecting much of that but even by the standards of the genre, there were some major pitfalls on this one.

i mean maybe i'm wrong cuz i haven't listened to a lot of shoegaze and i know it's a genre that's been beat to death, but the average shoegaze i've rated is better than this

What I mean is that despite expecting different things from this given the genre, it still has a lot of parts where nothing interesting goes on.

this isnt my favorite shoegaze album either but its such an important landmark in the genre and as a separate entity is an actual classic album, all other shoegaze is derivative of it

shoegaze isn't really about song structure so much as texture - there are plenty of shoegaze tracks with a lot of textural value where 'not much happens'

yes, that's also part of the genre
but there aren't any interesting textures either
