Considering how late I was to the party this still struck me as fresh & unique.

(copy-pasting my comment from rym but) as obviously influential as this album is i still feel like it doesn't get enough credit

im 100% positive this invented slowcore, midwest emo, skramz, probs other stuff but basically an entire wave of post-hardcore kids brooding even harder than ever

hyper-personal and poetic lyrics, giant dynamic contrasts, mix of clean/distorted guitars, overall bleak aesthetic, (occasional) vocals that sound like the vocalist is trying to shred his throat on purpose

the overall product doesn't skram but all the key elements are there so id say this is like proto-skramz

also while we're at it, this is basically not post-rock at all, at least not conventionally. i def get how it would come to influence post-rock, but this just isn't it.
