The man knows what he's doing, that's for sure. At this point I don't think it makes a lot of sense to compare new and old Ulver. The Bergtatt > Perdition City comments always make me scratch my head.

agreed, comparing perdition city to bergtatt is like comparing your first girlfriend to the leaning tower of Pisa (or something...).

two different beasts alltogether that just happen to have sprung from the same set of musicians. I think it's more fair to compare the albums of their various "eras" to one another.

Even then though it's not really even, like Nattens and this are very different beasts already. And God knows why Kveldssanger is considered part of their so-called bm trilogy.

probably because it falls right in between their two bm albums chronologically, but agrd, it's a folk album.

I think they intended to catch the black metal atmosphere without using any obvious stylistic characteristics of the genre - so, it's a black metal album on a spiritual basis rather than on a musical one. I agree though that it's weird to count it as one of their black metal albums because it technically isn't one.

Even when I was first getting into black metal I couldn't stand this album because it was so boring. I spent the entire listen thinking "when is the black metal gonna start?" and it basically never did. Because in reality this is a boring folk metal album with some black metal segments thrown in.
