Ah, gotcha!
It's a great album, Undertow, and I'm very glad I checked it.

Yap bro. Thing is that loads of our 5s can come off as pretensious because they are meant to taken serious, more introspective etc...
Have you checked the new Chelsea Wolfe man? That s some pretensious 4.5 stuff! Do it at night, driving or something..

In Tool’s case the pretentiousness is more of a byproduct of fans reading into the music way too much and eating up the “spiritual” aspect when in reality it’s just four guys making some good jams. They’re a good band and the themes they’ve chosen to focus on are cool but there it doesn’t elevate them to some higher plane of musical existence and I’m not gonna put them on a pedestal for it when they’re just human like everyone else
But that’s just me

Yeah...when I mean spiritual, I mean esoteric/ entrancing vibe...much music is transceding in many ways...not just Tool..and not Tool per se...that s why I listen to music anyway...and some music require a more serious approach. When I said they were special, means I think they have uniqueness in their sound, such as many of my favorite bands...another reason why I listen to music. I feel what you said about "byproduct of fans" but don t get me wrong from what I ve said.

I know what you mean and there are bands that make me feel that way for sure, like Radiohead for example. I just think it’s good to remind ourselves that our favorite artists are also people like us, they just happen to have made some great music. You wouldn’t know that if you just read YouTube comments though lol

>my remark was about walking around the threads saying this destroys that, this is their best...well its nothing but preferences...and this time often coming from some people new/ that don t give a shit about the band...so that s a regularity in behaviour.
You're clearly drunk and/or high but also completely correct.

I'm not even upset about not liking this album, and it's well-performed enough that I can't criticize others for liking it either. But it's definitely not my cup of tea.
"Missing some joy, some urgency" [2]

Totally agree noler. You hear what they were going for and it's undeniably technically impressive but so far it didn't resonate with me.
Who knows? It might happen later.

I just think it's fucking nice to listen to. Often almost soothing. So yeah I'm down with the resonations.

The lyrics in Invincible don't fit for me. "A Warrior stuggling to remain relevant" doesn't strike me as a phrase I'd ever hear on a Tool record. Pandering a bit to the older fanbase. "Well after I drop the kids off at soccer practice, maybe I can catch the first set at my local rock/dive bar"

i never thought I'd ever hear the phrase cookies and cream on a Tool record.

Soothing is a good word for this record. Definitely how I experience it. Honestly guys I'm starting to reach for a 5 on this.

We all reach for the 5 on this...eventually. Even those 1s will slowly go up (Pika).

I don't see how that lyric in Invincible is pandering to a certain demographic. Maynard writes from his current point in life/and the band's life - and I highly doubt he considers the fanbase at all when he writes.
