Very stoked for the solo album.
Jon Syverson did all the drums & I listened to a good interview with him the other day. I think he said the only actual drum he used was a floor tom, the rest was random shit they got at a hardware store. Link if you want to listen:

That new Alexis song is good. A Lingua Ignota feature would be sick.

How the fuck did I sleep on this for so long? It's like a rabid dissonant Nick Cave experience.

The refrain in Satan in the Wait and the ending to The Guest House are both just beautiful/lush parts too.

Word. I had it at a 4.5 for the longest time, then I realized that it was the best record that year and that I came back to it too often and I just loved most everything about it and it sounded not quite like anything else that came before. Takes a lot of beats from post punk, noise rock, art rock. Even harsh noise, industrial, and power electronics. Just a stellar blend of already great influences.

I thought this album would finally be my gateway into really heavy music or metal, but when I asked people for similar stuff they all just said there's nothing like it

Still think a Children of God jam’d be worthwhile if you ain’t gotten around to it
All rumbly and spooky and pretty and hammering

Yeah, earlier Swans and maybe noise rock, no wave, and earlier post-hardcore might be good places to look for sure. Like they don't sound anything like this, but if you dig it, you might dig DNA, Lydia Lunch, Scratch Acid, The Jesus Lizard, Big Black, and Shellac. If you dug the industrial shit like City Song, maybe look more into power electronics. Frozen Niagra Falls by Prurient seems to be a solid gate way album for shit like that. It's really long though.
Also try Written in Waters by Ved Buenes Ende. It's like pretty weird black metal. Lots of clean singing and INSANE, dissonant guitar stuff. Great songs all over the record.
Also, The Birthday Party get pretty brutal. Just throwing out shit.

Big Black for sure, but they weren't industrial like this
The vocals and guitars def remind me of them tho

call me a big fat hater, but what is that makes you guys 5 this? I thought it worked for what it is but there are parts where the song's effect wears off pretty quickly or that were just too repetitive.

Idk dude. It's so dark and spicy and exotic. Hits hard like a whiskey shot. The atmosphere is oppressive. I'm titillated the whole time so it's easy to be patient with it. So many great songs that take their time to develop but don't seem to meander at all. And the PRODUCTION. Every second of it sounds near perfect. If you aren't very into "what it is" in the first place, it becomes harder to explain. So many great grooves and guitar parts on this that I never get tired of, too. Alexis's voice has like, all the dark character in the world.
It's kinda hard to believe that they used to be a scene grind band.
