Wow if the whole album was mixed like that I'd actually like it more

If they're not remixing it what is even the point
Though I will say that Newsted's response to the whole issue, years ago, was surprising. He basically said "it's a classic, I think it's mixed just fine," and no, not sarcastically

He said the mix was bad, but that he still thought the album was great and he enjoyed that period of working with the band. I assume you're thinking of this video? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBUT8HFjZ74

Would be interesting to learn about the depths of their drug use during that era. Seems like a huge aspect of the band's history that kinda gets overlooked a lot in comparison to other enormous rock/metal bands, aside from "Dave did too much drugs that's why we kicked him out" from before and SKOM from after (which only explores James' drinking and rehab from what I remember).

Never been a huge Metallica fan— enough though that I own most of their CDs (Master, Ride, And Justice, St Anger — Hardwired) — but this is their best album for sure imo.

He doesn't seem to be a fan of the mix yeah and I wouldn't blame him if he's hurt. I mean listening to AJFA and then Doomsday for the Deceiver you realize that Metallica simply fucked up with Jason. Of course, all the money and fame help to feel better but still...

Yes, the quote about "I think how it was supposed to be was how it came out and what made the mark on the world but... cool, bass in it? Thanks dude" is what I was referring to

There are many, many problems with the mix for this album. The bass is honestly just one of many big issues. I agree that this would easily be Metallica's best work if the mix was anywhere near decent.
