"but you'd still try the softer edge cases though? as long as you don't just dismiss everything based on a few bands/albums and are still willing to try new stuff if it's interesting enough (even if you don't end up liking it) then yeah that's key in being an open minded listener imo"
Yes of course.
So you'd agree that it's perfectly reasonable for an open minded music listener to end up disliking black metal so long as they are open to trying it?

yeah, which going back to your original post, remaining open to trying it is different from "not tolerating" it. :P

That's how people should think of anal sex

Well if I didn't like something after trying it I'd be less willing to tolerate it, wouldn't you?

Had to edit my comment there as SirLord made it look like I was talking about anal sex.

uh no? just because i tried cannibal corpse and found that they're boring af doesn't mean i didn't go on to try and love countless other dm bands for instance
which was my point about not writing off an entire genre because you didn't like 3 bands or whatever

Who said the friends being referred to in the original post I quoted hadn't heard enough black metal to make an informed decision that this is the only black metal for them?

now you're moving the goalposts
i'm not trying to win some kind of argument i'm just presenting my point of view, as is. i personally think it's very unlikely that someone who has checked a lot of good or innovative / genre-melding bands in the genre ends up completely hating all of it, if you disagree that's fine.

u know certain general characteristics of the genre, every piece is different but

"u know certain general characteristics of the genre"
I'm really not. Not wanting to tolerate something doesn't mean never trying/experiencing it.
"u know certain general characteristics of the genre"
Exactly. It's perfectly reasonable if an open minded person doesn't like harsh vocals for example.

i mean yeah but there's a pretty big breadth of styles from agalloch to something like lantlos, then emperor, beherit, deathspell, thorns, thy catafalque, drudkh, early bathory... of course there's gonna be some elements in common but there's also lot of different styles on offer here

and i gotta admit i do feel a little reluctant to check any prog or bm but i do try sometimes, i also inform myself about any album beforehand to see if it catches my attention / it's got something going on that might make me like it / make it different to other prog / bm

that's honestly the only one i can think of myself, though there's probably bands that eschew that somehow, either by being purely instrumental, or by having them very low in the mix, or by using croons or operatic vocals or something... it's just that diverse

i hate blast beats and repetitive riffs

isn't being close-minded about not trying something because of how you think something will be without ever having tried it tho

" i hate blast beats"
so blackgaze then?
" and repetitive riffs"
have you listened to deathspell ?

"i also inform myself about any album beforehand to see if it catches my attention / it's got something going on that might make me like it / make it different to other prog / bm"
I think that's perfectly reasonable seeing as there's so much music one could potentially be checking out from so many different genres. Otherwise how do you know what to check and what not to.
