Aenima first, then Lateralus, then either this one or Undertow depending which of those two mentioned first you like better.

might as well start with Lateralus, it really doesn't matter all that much.

@clay lateralus is probably where most people fall for the bad but its also a 70min prog metal album that takes itself seriously so it can be hella off putting. judging by your 5s I'd say start with aenima even though its definitely one of the harder ones to get into. 10k days is probably the most accessible

Undertow is the most accessible, due to the simple song structures and short track lengths. This one has some of their most accessible single tracks though. I myself got interested in Tool because of Vicarious, so there's that. Undertow isn't representative of their overall sound though, so I'd say start with Aenima because it has a lot of heavy-hitting songs while still showing just how atmospheric they can get. It's a very versatile record.

i feel you but i dont usually say simplicity = accessibility, in this case 10k days has more immediately impressive instrumentation, better and more modern production, and is a bit less aggressive than undertow despite being arguably heavier in some regards

the first few songs on undertow are definitely radio friendly outside of their lyrics tho and sober is by far their most accessible song so i really do get where your coming from maybe ur right

It probably depends on what you're looking for as a music listener. 10,000 Days might be more accessible in the sense of it being able to convince music fans who are looking for something extraordinary, like uneven metres, weird structures, and a brooding atmosphere. Undertow, on the other hand, is easier to classify. It's still got a unique sound, but it's following a distinct style/genre. So it's more accessible for those who need some kind of point of reference.

so we're probably both right, depending on the situation

"All the interludes on Aenima are great and add to the depth and scope of the record."

they're ok but totally skippable especially when tracks like hooker w/ a penis, pushit and third eye are waiting for you

Pushit is amazing, but not the best on Aenima. The Salival version is 4 minutes longer and some would argue is the better version.
