Yes but I fail to see the relevance of that if you're responding to my comment.

yeah i don't know mate difference of opinion i guess.
" It's easy to see why even the most open minded of music listeners might not tolerate black metal."
this part in particular like damn really? if you're that open minded you'll probably at least enjoy this, ulver's bergtatt, maybe some more blackgaze kinda stuff. not all bm is mayhem and beherit and illdjarn.
at least that's how i got some mates into bm. but you know, my perception vs yours etc.

An open minded music listener doesn't have to enjoy every genre, surely you can agree with me on that?
If you enjoy everything then you have no taste.

think of it more as an extension of enjoying folk and chill acoustic shit than bm necessarily. which is why i used this and ulver's debut as examples
|

It's reasonable for someone to think the black metal elements ruin the folk and acoustic elements no?

in the same way that it might be reasonable for someone to think all the riffing and screaming in an old metallica song ruins the nice interludes and solos i guess. some of them might turn away and some of the might persevere and get used to it and grow to love it. that's sometimes part of being open minded, although not required and not in every circumstance.
maybe what we understand by "even the most open minded of music listeners" is fundamentally different then.

You really think to be an open minded music listener one has to be able to grow to love all genres of music?
Someone can be considered an open minded music listener even if they dislike metal in general. It's called taste.

there's a difference between disliking metal [/ substitute for any genre really] in general and disliking every single metal album ever made. there's exceptions and shit you know. like i really don't like pop but i enjoy some 80s michael jackson or prince every now and then.
|
| |
I don't disagree with you there.
"in general" implies that there are exceptions.
I mean the user I originally quoted even said that his friends like this album so there's an exception right there. I just think it's wrong to imply that someone who dislikes black metal in general belongs in the same category as someone who doesn't listen to anything outside of rap and electronic music.

def, never argued otherwise

I mean I generally don't like black metal (and don't care for this album much) but I don't think that makes me any less open minded as a music listener.

but you'd still try the softer edge cases though? as long as you don't just dismiss everything based on a few bands/albums and are still willing to try new stuff if it's interesting enough (even if you don't end up liking it) then yeah that's key in being an open minded listener imo
and yeah honestly i think the mantle is the weakest of the classic agalloch
