I sometimes ponder how much they were able to capitalize on basically being first.



I mean...That first album is easy to defend....but after you've got the formula I bet Iommi had no problem kicking out hundreds of riffs a year when there is basically zero competition and "every riff has been written" is still thirty years off.

yeah but sabbath weren’t the first riff based rock band out there nor was there any shortage of them when the band were at (arguably) their creative peak

Sabbath were the riff gods, but on their time and even today there are riffs which are on the same level made by other bands

I'd say Blackmore was as good at riffing as Iommi was in the 70's



other bands like UFO or Uriah Heep were awesome at it as well back in the day

Zeppelin has awesome riffs, but I wouldn't say their are as riff driven as those others I named. They were the less "riffy" out of the big three



That doesn't mean that the ones they do have aren't top notch tho
