"Sputnikmusic is a premier source for music reviews and music news, covering the best albums in indie, metal, and punk."
This is such a cringe-y site description.

I understand that this album is great and appreciate it as a form of art, as it's damn near a masterpiece, but I still cannot stand to listen to it.

I don't see how. There are different components into making a song, and most of these songs are well executed, nice flows, great lyrics, great delivery, and the atmosphere is fitting/lively/realistic. It just doesn't jive with me for some reason. I really appreciate it, but I can't seem to enjoy it even though it's parts are all quite appealing the product doesn't seem to capture me.
Addressing your edit: I might 3 it, but I know it's better than a lot of stuff I've 3'd and it's above average as well.

why is it a bad way to appreciate art and artistic merit?
|
| |
It's a tad silly because it sounds as if you're implying that music has intrinsic objective value. If you think an album (or anything really) is great, it should be because you genuinely enjoy it, not cause of nonsensical objective reasons.

My favorite part of this whole album is Lamar's performance on The Tonight Show with the medley.

critical consensus and cultural significance should have no bearing on whether you enjoy something, if you like it you like it, if you dont you dont, its really that simple

theres a difference between appreciation and enjoyment

I guess I understand that, but if you liked a band's instrumentals and not their vocalist...and their vocalist really threw you off and deterred you from listening to it but the instrumentation was phenomenal, would you rate it poorly? I really like a lot of the individual parts and performances, but when put together it's just not cutting it for me. I appreciate all of the talent and hard work put into it and it shows, it's just not for me. I can't rate it poorly because I don't think it's poor or even average, it's leagues above that. Just not for me.

I get you, boo boo. I understand why people like this so much, but I don't like it. Sometimes going with your actual level of enjoyment makes people real upset here.

i know what youre saying, thats called appreciation or recognition. if you choose to factor those into how you use the rating system i guess no one can tell you otherwise, i dont agree with it though

i can *recognize* that aphex twin has insane attention of detail in terms of his compositions and production, but it doesnt mean anything if i think it sounds like a jumbled mess of garbage (not true btw just an example)

"why is it a bad way to appreciate art and artistic merit?"
well if you rate based on enjoyment, then artistic merit shouldn't really cone into the equation. I guess people rate differently tho so that can be a criteria
|

basically you're saying i'm caving to the critical consensus and am a little girl

Thanks for the response climactic! Much appreciated
Yeah dbizzles, it seems that way.
And nah, Futures, I strongly disagree. Once again, I thought the parts were well executed and enjoyed a lot of them when separate from the rest, but together it did not work for me. It's not caving to anything but my desire to enjoy it because I know that it's something I should like and that I actually appreciate (because I absolutely adore Kendrick's lyricism, choice in guests, theme, and backing band) but just don't really want to listen to.

As an out and proud cuckold, I too appreciate the genius in Kendrick's lyrical prowess

I like to factor into appreciation/positive acknowledgement in my ratings. a lot of the ideas here are very good, and it certainly seems that most of his ambitions worked out well, but it's overall not my thing.
