Cos Peter Jackson, that's why

Nah but they added in a lot of stuff not in the original book so it's understandable

"Why the fuck they turned a 300 page children's book into a 9hr trilogy"

"Why the fuck they decided to turn a 300 page childrens book into an epic 9 hour trilogy is beyond me, though."

They aren't making an adaption of the original 300 page kids book, they're adapting the full Hobbit story that Tolkien retrospectively envisioned, showing what Gandalf is actually up to when he would periodically vanish etcetera. On top of that they've completely invented some characters/story arcs like Tauriel or Azog, but I've found them all pretty entertaining

PJ is convinced these will be his last Middle Earth-related movies ever, so he wants to do them big and indulgent, like your final meal being a motherfucking banquet. I'm a LOTR nutter so personally I'm stoked

Yeah Poly nailed it

Although they didn't invent Azog, he just wasn't present in the books, he did exist in the mythos

Good point Poly, I just found the first film didn't come close to justifying its length and wasn't particularly captivating at all. But then, I haven't read the LOTR or The Hobbit in 10 years and have barely touched any of his other works at all.

"Hack" would imply that he has no talent which is absolute horseshit

Anyway I'm not getting into this argument so late at night

I'll readily admit the first Hobbit is the weakest of them all, though I forgive it for being the one that sets the other two up, just as I forgave Fellowship for being somewhat similar. I guess the difference is Fellowship had better pacing and a gripping sense of doom throughout (nazgul pursuit etc). Still enjoyed it though, and Desolation of Smaug is triply fun
