First six are amazeballs, the first two with Dio are almost on par and the one with Ian Gillan is a great listen if a bit mismatched.

The Ian Gillan album is just bad, sorry con.

This is the only part of your post I can agree with.

"lol, so this aint true Sabbath, ok dudes"
Haha I'm not trying to disclaim the Dio albums, but if I had to explain what Sabbath is for me I would totally talk of Ozzy, not Dio, even though he contributed to awesome albums.

Can't stand the vocals there.

Although Ozzman's contribution to the Sabbath sound was unquestionable, for me the soul of the band was always Tony.

Tony and Geezer were the ones responsible for Sabbath's old sound

Bad sentence from me, with "Ozzy" I meant it as an era, not as a single person.

The presence of Ozzy certainly had a more positive influence on the rest of the band than the presence of Dio though. Even the last two albums of the Ozzy era were more creative musically than the Dio era albums (not talking quality here); there must be some correlation between the change in the band's sound/style and the change of vocalist.

Yeah, that's true, their style in the Dio-era fits better with Dio's voice, however I think Dio contributed more to the Dio-era than Ozzy did to the Ozzy-era
|

Perhaps Dio contributed more in literal terms but Ozzy's presence had a greater influence on the band overall than Dio did that's for sure.

eh at the time Dio joined the band, he definitely had a more positive influence than Ozzy. I can see why some people love the classic sound of bands but there's nothing wrong when they reinvent their sound if/when they stagnate.

I totally agree but the problem is when a band fails to imitate a past sound (Born Again). One could also say that when the change in sound is drastic and the line-up changes significantly a new name would be the best thing to do. For example, I think that Tyr is actually a great record but I fail to see how it can be labeled as Black Sabbath.

I prefer to judge albums on their own, after all a name is just a name, as I've always said, if Pink Floyd released an excellent disco album, I wouldn't mind to give it a high rate

Well yeah, but making a disco album with your original (or long running) line-up is different from doing it with basically a different band, I think. That said I have no problems in saying that I like Seventh Star even though it doesn't sound like Paranoid.
"We need to bump this to a 4 really its that good"
It's bound to happen.

The change in sound brought on by Dio's arrival definitely revived the band to some extent but Ozzy's influence from the beginning was definitely more unique and, perhaps indirectly, helped the other band members to be more inspired on their first 6 albums than they ever were with Dio. That's how I see it anyway.

Iommi would disagree with that sentence Jamie.

I know Ozzy struggled to find inspiration on a few occasions during that era but his playing certainly sounded more inspired back then, after all the Ozzy era is where all of his best riffs can be found.
