yaaaaaaaaaay, got this album yesterday, and it seems i'm one of the few people that can look past all the 'they sound too much like metallica' bullsh!t and enjoy this album.

Eh, to me it doesnt majorly sound like Metallica but most of the songs were bland and the lyrics were cheesy. They didn't really seem like they were trying for something original. I found the lyrics to Anthem funny as he just yells 'yeah' and 'anthem' a few times. The lyrics and music aspect of that dragon song to be silly and nonsensical. The instrumental The Crusade to be boring, slow and not do anything. However, I did enjoy Ignition and one other song which I forgot the name to. It certainly doesnt have much replay value as it should.

This is a great mainstream metal album. Who expects more than that is going to be very disappointed of course.
No one doubts this guys have the technical ability to write good stuff, but with this they obviously want money.

Oh and I disagree this is a metallica rip off. To me this rips a lot more than just metallica. Slayer, Dream Theater, Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, you name it. There are tons of other bands styles here. Particularly I like the variation in this album, because it combines a lot of OTHER bands I like.
This really sounds like a first demo from a new band, the one that they don't know what the hell they are doing and sound too much like the bands they like. It's strange it's actually their 3rd album ¬¬

Um, this album really isn't THAT bad.
Its not the WORST album ever, and it is DEFINITELY not a Metallica ripoff (although Unrepentant definitely has the riff to Through the Never).
However, it is definitely not a GOOD album. I honestly think that the members of Trivium simply just tried way to too hard to make the next 'Master of Puppets' or really just the greatest album of all time. The lyrics ended up very cheesy at times (see: Contempt Breeds Contamination, Ignition, Entrance to the Conflagration), and the music at times was very pretentious. If you don't know exactly what I mean by that, its just parts of songs that ended up way too techincal for what they needed to be, and detracted from the song. Did they really need that blazing fast tri-tone fill when two chords could have worked and sounded 10x better? Probably not.
They are somewhat suffering the same fate as Emerson, Lake, & Palmer. HUGE fanbase and very popular back in the 70s, but they get ripped on all the time because all of their stuff is overly techincal.
Now, I see plenty of potential in this band. Parts of Entrance to the Conflagration sound amazing (prechorus), Anthem has some cool bits, Tread the Floods and To The Rats have some great parts, the second half of Detonation is very good. Just, it seemed like they could not write a whole song without trying to make it "extreme" in some way. I mean, really, do I need THAT many b5's or b7's in a minor key song? It gets old after a while.
This album has way too many songs. A lot of them should have been cut out they should have purified the songs that were left. This should have left around 9-10 songs that were all good and we could have an enjoyable album here, but instead we have 13 songs with 1 good part in each one and the rest all utter bullshit 'extreme metalzz' shit.
That being said, I was quite impressed with the title track (The Crusade). It featured some very cool riffs and the whole song actually worked out. Not bad.

Markshell, if you're going to vote negatively on people's reviews, you need to explain why.

...at least the album cover is cool.... sorta...
Get outta here. If I want a level seven warrior monk with upgraded power sword I'll buy the latest Final Fantasy installment.

Great review. Man this album is horrendous. Finally someone shines light.

As much as I loathe Trivium, I also hate people who don't know how to use the term "sell out."

SF man I don't mean for this to sound rude or like a flame, but I think before this album even came out you had already decided you were gonna hate it... I think you all are being just a bit close-minded, I'm not a huge fan of Trivium... but I found a majority of the songs very memorable... So what if they head in a different direction than before? You either like it or you don't I guess. Just my opinion, hope I don't start a flaming contest

So what if they head in a different direction than before?
Why even ask this question? The reviewers have stated that regardless of the direction, they still believe the album sucks and they've explained why. This Message Edited On 10.19.06

Trivium isn't overly technical though.
While that is correct, there are definitely way more technical bands out there, I'm mainly referencing the random fast out of key fills and whatnot that seem to be thrown in all the time.

does anyone else hate how in every Trivium song, they play an intro riff and then stop while one guitar plays the main riff? their melodies are extremely unoriginal too...Detonation doesn't sound like it required too much thought.

Alright, so this album isn't good, but Shadows Fallen, come on man! No disrespect, since this review kicks the shit out of anything I would have wrote, but does this really deserve a 1? It really doesn't, at least I think. Is this really worse than almost every other album you've ever rated? Pretty bad music, but even Trivium deserve more respect than that...

but does this really deserve a 1? It really doesn't, at least I think.
Well, since you rated it 2.5, of course you'd say that. I rated Master of Puppets a 2 (because I couldn't rate lower), but I don't ask people if the album really deserves a 5.
