I have listened to most of Isis's releases and this one has got to be my favorite from their catalog. From start to finish, I enjoyed this one so much that this caused me to explore more bands from the Atmospheric Sludge genre of music.
I am pleased with the results of my searches.

I enjoyed Wavering Radiant more than I should have I think. It was just different to my ears, which made it very enjoyable.

tbh I only listened to it like twice before I decided Ghost Key was the only one worth my time

Ah. I listened to it about three times before I came to my conclusion that although it was different, it was a good kind of different; to me at least.

vocals really kill this

Going into Wavering Radiant with an open mind is a very good idea. Actually, that's a good idea with every new CD after you enjoyed a bands previous release. To me it helps the process smooth along much faster that way.

whats wrong the vocals on this album? the later albums i could understand that, but here they're ok and they're buried underneath the guitar anyway

Since Isis broke up, I've had to go back to this album, where I started.
Okay, I don't know what to say. WAY too good...Panopticon simply swallowed me whole. The latent sense of unease behind what seems to be such an unassuming post-metal album is disturbing.
Aaron Harris' drumming might just reinforce that. I see complaints about its repetitiveness - you're right, it does repeat a lot of the time. The concept of Panopticon is about being watched wherever you go; the static, repeating drum patterns remind the listener of this basic truth of the Panopticon experience. There will be no release and no resolution. Even though the drums change from time to time, they always pull right back to the main theme.

First album I've listened to by them. How does it compare to their newer stuff? To bad they broke up.

Newer stuff isn't as good as Panopticon, but again, Panopticon is one of my favorite albums and my favorite Isis album.
Listening to Absence (more like this), and then Wavering (slightly different style).

What about Oceanic?

Oceanic came out 2 years before this.

From Panopticon, go to Oceanic, then Wavering Radiant. Absence isn't quite as good, from my listen to it...but still not bad. Celestial is also great, but a lot heavier and less of a distinct style.

absence wouldn't be that good without Dulcinea and Garden Of Light. those two tracks make it good. Holy Tears and Wrists of Kings is decent, but not better than the former two.

Holy Tears is one of my favorite Isis songs and Not in Rivers, but in Drops is one of the best tracks.
